MARY ELIZABETH (BETTY) ELLIS (nee MCKENZIE) It is with much sadness that we announce Betty's passing on Friday, August 17, 2007 at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg at the age of 87 years; she died peacefully, surrounded by her family. Remaining to forever cherish Betty's memory are her children, Donna (Ken) Krebs and Jack (Maureen) Ellis; grandchildren, Bryon (Noelle) Krebs, Sarah and Darcy Ellis; great-grandchildren, Morgan, Skye and Damian; she will be especially missed by her loving and devoted sister Violet McKenzie with whom she shared the latter years of her life in Winnipeg. She was predeceased by her loving husband Borden (1975); grandson Neil (1987); mother and father, Harry and Jennie McKenzie; her sisters, Mae (1935) and Jean (2003). Born February 28, 1920 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Betty lived much of her early life in Hartney and Souris, Manitoba. She married Borden Alton Ellis on July 23, 1943 and raised her family in Bienfait and North Portal, Saskatchewan. In her later years Betty returned to Morden and ultimately to Winnipeg, where she resided until her passing. In Winnipeg, Betty devoted much of her time to working with the Children's Hospital Book Market, where she and her fellow volunteers were remarkable and dedicated fundraisers. She was an active Legion member throughout her life and was also a committed member of the Order of the Eastern Star, achieving the position of Worthy Matron. In addition to these activities, she enjoyed embroidery, knitting, and baking. Traveling was also a passion for her, and she visited throughout North America and Europe, collecting many souvenirs along the way. In compliance with Betty's wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. In the near future, a private graveside service will be held in Estevan, Saskatchewan, where she will be buried beside her husband. The family would like to thank the dedicated nurses and doctors of the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre who provided phenomenal care and comfort during Betty's last days. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to celebrate her remarkable life by making a donation to either the Children's Hospital Foundation, CE 501 - 840 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3A 1S1, or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200 - 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3L 0K6.
