MARJORIE GREENLEAF MCGAVIN (nee MACONNELL) July 15, 1919 - August 20, 2007 On Monday evening, our family and community lost one of their most beloved members and friends. Marjorie touched the lives of everyone who knew her. She had a beautiful smile, an infectious laugh, and was filled with unconditional love which she freely shared. A visit with her left everyone feeling uplifted. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and shared an exceptionally close relationship with her children, their spouses, and her two beloved granddaughters. Her children, Alexander (Sandy) Gregor (Joan Walters), of Winnipeg; Mary (Bob) Kraigsley, of Winnipeg; and Jim, of Toronto; and her granddaughters, Darla (Kyle) Gauthier, of Winnipeg; and Emily Gregor (Tyler Woodstrom), of Toronto, will miss her so much. Marjorie was predeceased by her much loved husband Robert McGavin. As her family grew, Marjorie continued her worklife, first as secretary to Rosedale United Church. The church was, next to her family, the centre of her life; and her contribution to both Rosedale and Regent's Park (now St Mary's Road United) was remembered long after she was able to participate actively. After moving to St Vital, Marjorie spent the rest of her career as part of that school division, serving as secretary to the Superintendent, as well as to Windsor School and Glenlawn Collegiate. In all of these settings, she became the friend and advisor to all, staff and students alike. The scope and value of her larger contribution were ultimately recognized in the St Vital Heart of the Community award, which she received in 1999. During the course of her work within church, school and community, Marjorie became widely known as Treasure - and for her family and the wide circle of friends and acquaintances who experienced the warmth of her affection, she was just that. Marjorie's love of people was closely followed by her love of animals and of the lake, and she was never without at least one dog and one cottage. Her life and the warmth of her caring have touched so many; and the love of her friends and family sustained her during the last few difficult years. Particular tribute is owed to one exceptionally faithful friend - Shirley Blaikie. A service to commemorate Marjorie's life and contribution will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 28, at St Mary's Road United Church (613 St Mary's Road). Flowers are gratefully declined. Anyone wishing to make a contribution in Marjorie's memory is invited to consider her own favourite charity, the Winnipeg Humane Society.
