PETER KOWAL February 14, 1922 August 24, 2007 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather at his home in Winnipeg on Friday August 24, 2007. Peter was the son of Dmytro and Anastasia (Nellie) Kowal. He was born February 14, 1922 in Oakburn, Manitoba and lived and worked on the family farm. He married Marie Kowalchuk on July 17, 1946 and they farmed in the Oakburn area. He was an active member of St. Volodymir Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which he helped build in Oakburn. He was actively involved in CYMK and was a member of the Ukrainian National Hall in Oakburn. Peter was involved in numerous committees for many years including holding the office of Treasurer from 1937 to 1958. Peter and Marie sold the farm in 1967 and moved to Winnipeg where they were members of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. Peter worked at Coldstream Refrigeration Products from 1967 until his retirement in 1988. After retirement Peter and Marie operated a Bed and Breakfast out of their home, enjoying many repeat visits with guests from all around the world. Peter was predeceased by his wife Marie; son Theodore; father Dmytro; mother Nellie, and sister Lesia. He is survived by four children, son Emil and wife Linda; grandson Jason; granddaughter Tami and husband Serhiy Denisenko; great-grandchildren, Oksana and Sasha; daughter Darlene and husband Larry Sherman; and sons, Zane and John. He is also survived by two sisters, Olly Drul and husband Myron and daughters, Dolores Drul and Iris Reaume, (Randy) and Anne Kondrat and sons, Terry (Marilyn) and Arnold (Carmen). Also Lesia's children, Debbie Spitula (Dennis) and daughters, Pamela and Marisa, Dwayne Wasylenko (Trisha) and Darrell Wasylenko. Also many other nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends. Peter clearly was a strong person having overcome several tragedies and challenges throughout his life. Family and friends were very important to Peter and Marie and guests were always welcome in their home. Parties featuring live Ukrainian music, dancing and plenty of food were a regular occurrence. Peter had a beautiful voice and he loved to sing. He especially enjoyed leading the family in Christmas carols and singing along at home with his Ukrainian tapes. Gardening was one of Peter's passions and he loved the work as it reminded him of his time on the farm. He was generous in spirit and gave much of his produce away to family and friends. Other than gardening his spare time was devoted to following the Blue Bombers and watching his favourite Western movies. Peter was truly a thoughtful and caring person who loved family gatherings. In his later years he hosted regular family brunches at Perkins and his face always lit up at the sight of his great-grandchildren, Oksana and Sasha. Peter had a wonderful sense of humour and loved to tell stories, especially about the old days . We love you and will miss you dearly. We'll save your chair for you at Perkins . Prayers at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 27, 2007. Funeral service will be held at the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, 1175 Main Street at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 with Very Rev. Fr. Henry Lakusta officiating. Interment to follow in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or a charity of ones choice. VICHNAYA PAM'YAT CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
