Donat grew up and spent most of his younger years in St. Laurent, MB. During that time, he worked as an ice fisherman in winter and as a construction worker in summer. In 1963, Donat and Rose decided to move their family to Winnipeg where he was hired by the St. Boniface School Division and worked there as a custodian for 21 years. Dad loved to listen to music and dance. He taught all his seven daughters how to two-step and polka and his son the love of hunting and fishing. Don always loved to spend time with family and numerous friends that he and Rose always kept in touch with. In his later years after suffering a stroke, Dad kept himself busy by knitting slippers and mittens for his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
