ROBERT GEORGE HALFORD Very suddenly at his home in Mississauga, Ontario on Thursday, August 30, 2007 in his 85th year. Devoted husband of the late Catherine Wilma for 53 years. Much loved father to Lisa and Penny and Papa to special granddaughter Grace. Predeceased by his sister Nancy Lackie of Saskatoon. Will be sadly missed by his cousin Irene Pile of Nanaimo; sister-in-law Lynn Carlson and nieces Terri Longbottom and Marni Pascal all of Winnipeg. Winnipeg born and educated, Robert was age 20 and employed in the aviation industry in the Manitoba capital when he joined the Canadian Merchant Navy in 1943. After serving four years as a seaman, in 1947 he follower a career as a newspaper and trade magazine writer, and later editor and publisher of the Canadian Aircraft Operator until retirement in 1988. That year he embarked on the six-year post retirement program of research and writing that has culminated in his book, The Unknown Navy. Visitation and funeral service will be held at Lee Funeral Home, 258 Queen Street South, Streetsville (Mississauga Road, South of 401), on Wednesday, September 5 from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 12:00 noon.
