ELIZABETH (BETTY) FORTIN (nee BUCKINX) It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth (Betty) Fortin (nee Buckinx) on September 3, 2007, at the age of 83. Betty was predeceased by her loving husband Roland (Ron), sisters Mary (Paul) and Cora (Reg), brothers Robert and Henry. She leaves to mourn and cherish her memory her sons Rollie (Lois), Robert (Tannis), grandchildren Heather, Kevin, Tyler, Michelle, Kyle, sisters-in-law Therese Fortin, Minerva Buckinx and Lorraine Buckinx. Mom's early years were spent at Marshall Wells where she met her husband Ron. After raising her family she later rejoined the work force at Arthur Balfour. Camping at Betula Lake was a favourite spot for many summers when the boys were young. Mom and Dad as well as the boys developed many friendships while spending time there. Eventually a permanent spot was found at Lee River where the family has since spent every summer enjoying the outdoors, boating, fishing and swimming. Mom was always the first to volunteer to be boat spotter, watching her grandchildren tubing and water-skiing. Her grandchildren were the love of her life. She enjoyed being a part of her grandchildren's activities and rarely missed an event. Other people would ask where your mother was if she was not attending. Weekends were spent at various hockey rinks at every end of the city. If not being a spectator she would participate from being the goalie, to playing mini-stick hockey or playing catch with a baseball. For many years, Betty hosted and enjoyed with the grandchildren the annual New Years Eve Sleepover complete with hats and horns. Mom grew up in a family that were active market gardeners in North Kildonan. She continued that love of gardening at home and at the lake. There were always beans, cucumbers or tomatoes to take home anytime you visited. Her homemade relishes and pickled beets were family favourites. Throughout her life Mom displayed determination and perseverance in any endeavour she chose. At the age of 61, Betty was able to obtain a driver's license and maintain her independence. Mom tried to pass on these values to her children and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Wish Foundation. A celebration of Betty's life will be held on Friday, September 7, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Desjardins Funeral Chapel, 357 Des Meurons Street.
