He is survived by his loving family - his wife and best friend of 53 years, Shirley; three daughters, Margo Moss, Mona Maxfield and Catherine Peterson; his sons-in-law, Campbell Moss, Christopher Maxfield and Glenn Peterson; and his grandchildren, all of whom he was especially proud: Lauren and Olivia Maxfield and Adam, Amelia and Kate Peterson. He is also survived by his brother Richard McNaughton of Moose Jaw; his sisters-in-law, Edna Dewar of Regina and Jean Arnold of Saskatoon; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents Fred and Peggy McNaughton; sister Margaret Mackenzie; brothers, Fletcher, John and Douglas McNaughton; sister-in-law Judith McNaughton; brothers-in-law, Allan Dewar and Derek Arnold. Charles had an active and interesting life. In the 1960s he was a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Food Science, University of Manitoba, where he was a respected professor and favourite lecturer of many students. He was honoured to have been asked to serve as Honorary President of the Agriculture Students' Faculty Association. In the 1970s he accepted a position with the Government of Manitoba as Head of its Dairy Division and was subsequently appointed Director of the Animal Industry Division. In the 1980s he joined the Government of Alberta as an Executive Officer and was appointed Provincial Dairy Commissioner, Chair of the Department's Budget Committee and Chair of the Alberta Feed Grain Market Adjustment Appeal Body. After retirement, he established McNaughton Associates, Consultants To The Canadian Food Industry, a challenge which he greatly enjoyed in spite of the heavy travel requirements. Over the years Charles was a dedicated worker who contributed significantly both in his employment role and beyond. He was active locally, nationally and internationally. He participated in regulatory reviews of both Agriculture Canada and Health Canada at the request of these agencies. He also taught the Dale Carnegie Course for many years. Charles served two terms as a member of the Executive Committee of the Faculty Association, University of Manitoba. He was Commission Consultant with the International Dairy Federation in Brussels for many years and a member of the Canada Committee on Animal Production Services, a member of the Federal-Provincial Governments' Agri-Food Committee and played a major role as a Councillor with the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists and with the Winnipeg Branch of the Agricultural Institute of Canada. He was a graduate of the Canadian Officers Training Course and was appointed a Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps at the completion of his training. There were a number of high points that stood out in Charles' life. He recalled vividly his early years in Saskatchewan: playing first base for the Moose Jaw Gremlins hardball team; deer and moose hunting with his father and brothers; curling with the boys; and hunting up-land game birds with Shirley and his daughters. The many years spent at his family cottage at Florence Lake were very important to him. He had fond memories of canoeing and hiking with family and friends. He considered his building of the guest cottage a major accomplishment. Charles was very much appreciative of the support, advice and encouragement he received from Dr. Jack Nesbitt and numerous colleagues and staff. He will be remembered by his former students with a scholarship in his name in the Faculty of Food Science at the University of Manitoba. A private family service will be held at a later date.
