JOHN PHILIPPO May 6, 1929 - September 5, 2007 On Wednesday, September 5, 2007, John Philippo, aged 78, went home to be with the Lord. He was predeceased by his dear wife Trudy, and is survived by his two daughters, Judy (Martin) Kanters and Mary (Ron) MacLean, and his six grandchildren, Stephen, Michelle, Rebecca, Elyse, Lydia and Bethany. He is also survived by his two sisters, Trudy Lauritzen of California and Rie de Lange in Holland. John was a much beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend and mentor. Born in Rietveld, Holland in 1929, John immigrated to British Columbia, Canada at the age of 19. There he met his Dutch bride and established a very successful business, Holland Landscapers Ltd. John was highly respected in the Vancouver community, and amongst his many achievements was involved in the landscaping of the Vancouver Airport, UBC, SFU, the Courthouse, Planetarium, the Vancouver Racetrack and Expo 86. He also served as president of the B.C. Nurserymen's Trades Association for a number of years. At 45 years of age, John made a life-changing commitment to Jesus Christ and generously served the church and community throughout the next 33 years. He was a man with a large and generous heart. In 1999, after 50 years in Vancouver, and following the passing of his wife, John moved to be with family in Winnipeg, where he continued to make a valuable contribution to all he knew, and especially to the people of Gateway Christian Community. Though John will be deeply missed by his many friends and his loving family, we rejoice that he runs in the heights of heaven with the Lord Jesus, pain-free and full of joy. We thank God for John's life and legacy. A viewing will be held between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 9, 2007 at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street. Ample parking at the rear. A funeral service will be held at Gateway Christian Community, 851 Panet Rd., on Monday, September 10, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The King's School - New Canadians Classroom.
