Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDITH GROCHMAL (nee HOLMES) It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our devoted and loving mother, grandmother and special great-grandmother Edith Grochmal on September 8, 2007, at the Victoria Hospital at the age of 82. Edith was born in Derbyshire, England, in 1925 to Florence and James Holmes and was the youngest of seven children. When she was a baby the family immigrated to Canada with their mother. She was raised in Sylvania, SK, area and left home at a young age to attend the School for the Deaf in Saskatoon. After completing her schooling she continued to work at the School for the Deaf which she enjoyed. In 1952 she married John Grochmal and together they farmed in the Ozerna, MB, district and raised their family. After selling their farm in 1974 they moved to Brandon where she was employed at Hillcrest Place until retirement. They moved to Winnipeg in 1994 and lived at the Deaf Centre of Manitoba. She was a member of the Winnipeg Community Centre for the Deaf and the Manitoba Deaf Seniors Club. The highlight of her life was her family, especially her grandchildren and two recent great-grandsons. She always cherished the Sunday drives that dad took her on: the trips were always etched in her mind like a painting. Her heart was always soft and compassionate for the family pets. She enjoyed Sunday masses and social gatherings held throughout the week at the Deaf Centre and the times she shared with her many friends there. Edith was predeceased by her husband John in 1998, her parents, two brothers and four sisters. Edith leaves to mourn her passing her daughters Edna (Ken) Podruski, Martha (Earl) Mayor, grandsons Scott (Kerri) Podruski, Kelly Mayor, Derek (Michelle) Mayor and granddaughter Jodi Podruski (Mark Birch), great-grandsons Logan Podruski and Dylan Birch and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral service will be held at the Deaf Centre of Manitoba, 285 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, on Wednesday, September 12, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. Father Albert Lalonde, O.M.I. will be officiating. Cremation has taken place and interment will follow at a later date. Special thanks to the personal care staff at Deaf Centre of Manitoba for the special care and love that Edith received. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. Thomson Funeral Home 669 Broadway 783-7211
