IRVING WILFRED SCOTT (SCOTTY) 1924 - 2007 It is with great sadness the family of Irving Scott announces his passing on September 12, 2007, at the age of 83 years. Remaining to forever cherish his memory are his wife of 59 years Elizabeth, his daughter Rhonda (Wayne) Guidolin, his son Perry (Carole), daughter-in-law Donna Mae; grandchildren Tara (Harvey), Christopher, Caralee, Erin, McKinley, Cole; great-grandchildren Kristina, Adanna, Jayden. He is also survived by sisters Fern, Edith, Betty, brother Keith and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Jim, brother Gordon, parents Wilfred and Mary. Scotty was born and raised on the family farm near Baldur, MB. Answering the call to war he left home and volunteered in the Canadian Army in 1942, eventually ending up assigned to the Canadian Scottish Regiment. He landed on Juno Beach in Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and fought his way through France and Holland to the German border where he was wounded on February 18, 1945. After recovering in Belgium he was shipped home on the Queen Elizabeth in December of that same year and honourably discharged in February of 1946. Scotty then moved to Dominion City to work with his uncle running the local transfer. In April 1948 he married Elizabeth (Betty) Ramsey and began raising a family. In 1951 Scotty started working for the Highways Department and with a promotion to maintenance superintendent, he and his family relocated to Steinbach in 1971. He retired in 1987 after 36 years of service. As a young man Scotty loved baseball and spent many hours playing short stop for the Dominion City Maroons. So with two young sons he was a natural coach for both ball and hockey. He also loved the annual hunting expeditions that included Jim, Perry, Keith and any other available nephews and friends. His vegetable garden in the summer and curling in the winter were always top priorities. Scotty was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion and in 1990 he received a Meritorious Service Medal. During retirement he passed many hours working and enjoying comrades at the Steinbach Legion. Among his most treasured memories were his two trips back to Europe, the second being with his two sons Jim and Perry and his brother Keith. He also spent many hours pouring over the Second World War history books. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were always a great source of pride and amusement. A hug or a kiss from one of them was worth more than gold. A kind man of few words, Scotty was good humoured, easy-going and fun-loving. Losing his son Jim in 2005 was a terrible blow and he often spoke of a time when they would meet again - now they have. A celebration of Scotty's life will take place on Monday, September 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, 465 Henry, Steinbach, MB. A reception will follow at the Steinbach Legion Hall, 294 Lumber. Interment to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations in Scotty's name may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
