PETER JAMES SHELTON July 15, 1915 - September 18, 2007 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Peter J. Shelton. He died peacefully at his home in Winnipeg on the evening of September 18, 2007, after a long illness, with his family by his side. Peter faced life's last challenges with the courage and determination that all those who knew him would recognize. It is with great pride that we celebrate his life and his accomplishments. Peter was born in Sylvan, Manitoba, into a pioneering family. He was educated in Winnipeg and had diverse interests. He studied painting with L.L. Fitzgerald at the Winnipeg School of Art and worked for a number of years as a commercial artist. He earned a Science degree at the University of Manitoba and studied Entomology at the Morden research station until the war years. During the Second World War, he served in the Canadian navy in 1944 and 1945, stationed in Halifax and Bermuda. After the war he studied Medicine at the Manitoba Medical College and graduated with the class of 1950. He trained in General Surgery in Winnipeg and Montreal and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in 1960. He practiced medicine in north Winnipeg for 37 years, from 1950 to 1987. Peter married his medical school classmate Elizabeth Malyska and together they built a medical practice and a life together. They worked side by side and were partners in all things. Peter was an energetic and dedicated physician. He lived with a sense of purpose, a quiet confidence, a generosity of spirit that allowed him to connect with most people. He took genuine pleasure in helping others and one who entered into his presence left valued and affirmed. He had a passion for gardening and especially for his rose garden. Peter believed it was an honour to serve his neighbours and his community and he gave without complaint or a desire for recognition. He was a founding member of the new Victoria General Hospital and served as the first President of the Medical Staff. Peter was a founding member and President of the North Winnipeg Rotary Club, as well as the North Winnipeg YMCA. Peter served as treasurer of the Manitoba Medical Association and President of the Association of General Practitioners of Manitoba. He also was a member of the Sons of the Ukrainian Pioneers, affectionately know as the Soup Club. Peter is survived by his devoted wife Dr. Elizabeth Malyska; and children, Dr. David Shelton (Carol), Dr. Paul Shelton (Dr. Gina Rempel), Dr. Ian Shelton (Dr. Tuba Koktay), Dr. Lynne Shelton (Robin Walker), and Ms. Lisa Shelton (Ken Campbell); grandchildren, Adria and Claire, Colin, Lauren and Graeme, Samantha and Stuart, and Victoria. He was predeceased by son Leslie Michael Shelton; and his brothers, Max, Paul, Andrew; and sister Olga. His family would like to thank all of the individuals who provided care for Peter in the past three years and made it possible for him to have his wish to remain at home. A memorial service is to take place at the Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, on Saturday, September 29, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. Father Ed Evanko will be officiating. A reception will follow at Glen Eden. Flowers are gratefully declined. If you wish, donations in remembrance of Peter may be made to the YMCA of Winnipeg, to Winnipeg Harvest, to the Les Shelton Fund at the Winnipeg Foundation, or to the charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to: Glen Eden Funeral Home 338-7111

  • Memories of my childhood cannot be described. I loved him! Always would love to go het "a needle" from him because he would always shake out a two pack of chiclets out of my arm. Much Luv. - Posted by: Andrew Skrypnyk (Patient/son of good friend Borden Skrypnyk) on: Feb 20, 2021
