FLORENCE IVY YOUNG 1910 - 2007 It is with sadness that we announce the death of our mother, Florence Ivy Young, on September 27, 2007 at Middlechurch Care Home. Mom was predeceased by three of her children, William in 1929, Ivy in 1931 and Keith in 1954 and by her husband William (Bill), in 1973. She was also predeceased by her sister Rose Alderson, brothers, George Delaney, Stan Delaney and Jack Delaney, brother-in-law Gordon Alderson and sisters-in-law, Peggy Delaney, Francis Delaney and Florence Delaney. Mom was born in London, England on October 14, 1910, the first child of Delores and John Pearce. Her father lost his life at the beginning of the First World War when his ship, the H.M.S. Good Hope, went down near the Falkland Islands. In 1918, her mother married Canadian soldier, Peter Delaney. After the war, Peter brought his family to Canada, arriving in Winnipeg in May 1919 during the Winnipeg General Strike. Mom remembered one day when she and her mother encountered one of the rowdier demonstrations near City Hall and took refuge in a doorway. She also remembered the many weeks that she, her mother, and her siblings, Rose and Peter, spent at the Immigration Hall beside the CPR Station before the family was allowed to establish their new home in Winnipeg. Mom and Dad were married in 1929 and they settled in Elmwood. Later they lived on Selkirk Avenue and, in 1955, they moved to Penninghame Street where they remained until Dad's death. While her sons were growing up, Mom worked in the printing industry, first at Wilson's Stationers and then at Baker and Sons. Although she worked very hard at her home and her job, she found time to enjoy the monthly get-togethers with a special group of friends who referred to themselves as the club . Mom had always enjoyed travelling, having been on many road trips in Canada and the United States, and after her retirement in 1975, she took several trips overseas. She was also an enthusiastic participant in a bowling league prior to a shoulder injury which curtailed this activity. In 1977 she moved to an apartment at 1660 Henderson Highway where she made many friends and enjoyed the birthday dinners, evenings of bingo, and other events which took place at the building's social club'. She was almost 96 years old when her failing health made it impossible for her to continue living on her own and she took up residence at the Middlechurch Care Home. She will be missed by her sons, Ken (Audrey), and Don (Gloria) of Albert Beach, and Bill (Durlene) of Winnipeg, brother Peter Delaney of Winnipeg, sister-in-law, Margaret Delaney of Winnipeg, 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend its deepest appreciation and sincere thanks to the staff of the Middlechurch Care Home and particularly the staff of N2 for the excellent care our mother received during her time there and for making her last days as peaceful and comfortable as possible. Interment will take place at a private ceremony; however friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial service to be held in the chapel of Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler Ave. on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Friends of Elmwood Cemetery Inc.
