FRED SOLTYS May 29, 1920 September 26, 2007 It is with love and great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Fred Soltys of Winnipeg, Manitoba on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at the Grace General Hospital at the age of 87 years. He was predeceased by his parents, John (1962) and Sophie (Belan) (1998); brother Andrew (1997); brother-in-law Peter Byskal and sister-in-law Ann (Peter) Soltys. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Anne of 60 years, daughter Leona (Martin) Nechwediuk, daughter Phyllis (David) Shumski and son Ivan; three grandchildren, Shannon (Garnet), Karen and Craig (Jodi); six great-grandchildren, Jordan, Brendan, Brynn, Caelan, Nathan, Ava and two great-step grandchildren, Braeden and Madison; one sister Lena Byskal; two brothers, Steve (Annie) and Peter; sister-in-law Olga Soltys; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Dad will always be remembered for his witty responses. Fred was conscripted into the Canadian Army on December 4, 1941 and served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers. He completed his basic training on February 17, 1942, and became a Lance Corporal in training on July 12, 1943. On January 3, 1944 Fred, along with Americans, landed at Kiska, Aleutian Islands. On January 7, 1945 Fred sailed to England. From here he was assigned to the Lake Superior Regiment and was posted to the front lines in Holland. The regiment fought its way through Holland and plunged into Germany. Near Berlin, Fred was wounded. He recovered in an army hospital behind the lines. After a while he stayed with a family in Holland who treated him like a son. Fred returned to Canada on February 12, 1946 and received his discharge on March 13, 1946. Fred continued to farm with his father and brothers. On February 12, 1947 he married Anne Duchominsky and they continued to farm in the Ozerna District until well into retirement. In 1994 they sold the farm and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness 11 Timothy 4:7-8. Thank you to all the staff of the Grace General Hospital and to all the friends and family for their care and compassion. Thank you to all the staff at the Oakview Place Extendicare for the last two years that Dad spent there. As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Fred's memory may be made to the St. Basil's Stained Glass Window Fund or the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church Cemetery Fund. Prayers will be sung on Sunday evening, September 30 at 7:00 p.m. in the St. Basil's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 202 Harcourt Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
