BERNICE ELLEN JONES 1921 2007 Bernice (Bunny) Jones, a long time resident of Flin Flon, passed away suddenly on September 22, 2007 at the age of 86 years at her home in High River, Alberta. Bunny is survived by her brother William (Josephine) Martin of Winnipeg, Manitoba; her son Richard (Suzanne May) Jones of Winnipeg, Manitoba; her daughter Donna (Ian) Noble of Okotoks, Alberta and her cherished grandchildren, Bronwyn and Erin Jones, and Kate and Gavin Noble. Bunny was predeceased by her husband Charles in 2006 and son Leonard in 1966. Bunny was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1921. She grew to become a talented athlete, winning a Canadian Championship in track and field at the age of 17. Bunny also became a passionate and knowledgeable amateur naturalist, which led to a position with the foundling Ducks Unlimited Organization in Winnipeg. At the onset of the Second World War rather than accept an invitation to train with the Canadian Olympic Team, Bunny joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, Women's Division, and spent most of her enlistment posted to radar stations along the coast of British Columbia. After the war, Bunny moved north to Flin Flon for work and adventure, where she obtained employment in the assay lab at the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company. It was there, at the H.B.M. and S., that Bunny met Charles Jones. Charlie and Bunny were married in 1954 and made their home for the next 46 years in Flin Flon. During her years in Flin Flon, Bunny was a member of the Fire Belles Organization, a supporter of the Kinsman School, and an altar guild member for St. Peter's Anglican Church. She was actively involved in the arts community, and an employee of the Flin Flon Public Library where she indulged her lifelong love of books. Bunny also enjoyed many years of curling, bowling, card games with friends, and the Old Time Dance Club. Bunny's love of sports and nature endured as well as she coached for the Flin Flon Track and Filed Association and volunteered at the Flin Flon Museum where she developed her Nature Nook . At every opportunity, Bunny hiked into the wild areas she loved around Flin Flon, berry picking, bird watching, collecting plant specimens and tracking animals. Although Bunny was actively involved in many community efforts over the years, her family, home and garden remained the centre of her life. Bunny and Charlie moved to High River, Alberta in 2000 to be near family but Flin Flon was always dearly missed. At Bunny's request she will rest with her husband and son at Hillside Cemetery in Flin Flon. A graveside service is planned for Saturday, October 6, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. with Reverend R. Knight officiating. In Bunny's memory donations may be made to the Flin Flon Museum or the Flin Flon Public Library. To email condolences to the family please visit www.snodgrassfuneralhomes.com.
