DR. GEORGE TOMLINSON It is with sadness that his children announce the sudden passing of Dr. George Tomlinson, long-time faculty member and senior administrator at the University of Winnipeg, at his residence early Thursday, September 27th, 2007. George was born on May 26, 1943 in Hazel Grove, England. In 1966, he emigrated to Ontario, where he earned his Ph.D. at the University of Waterloo. George completed his Post-doc year at the University of Oregon in 1974. George then joined the University of Winnipeg's Chemistry Department and served in many academic and administrative capacities, including Professor of Chemistry, Academic Assistant to the President (Planning), Vice-President (Academic), and Chair of the Chemistry Department. Throughout his career he served the University with great loyalty and commitment, contributing to self-governance and university committees and task forces. In addition to his passion for his career, George enjoyed sharing good food and wine with friends and family, traveling, and playing and listening to music. He will be remembered for both his integrity and his wry British sense of humour. George is survived by his sons, David of Toronto and William of Winnipeg; his daughter Sally of Vancouver; his stepson Michael Goossen of Calgary; and his sister Jean Ward and family of Waterloo. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Brian Pettitt for all of his personal and practical support, along with Gabor Kunstatter (Dean of Science) and James Christie (Dean of Theology) for all their help with the planning and preparation for George's memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the University of Winnipeg Foundation, for the Marsha Hanen Global Ethics and Dialogue Fund, 705-491 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3B 2E4. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 4th at 3:00 p.m., in the University of Winnipeg's Convocation Hall, 515 Portage Ave. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU CO. I had the great pleasure of having Dr. Tomlinson as my professor for biochemistry in my second year and Advanced Biochemistry (which he jokingly abbreviated ABC) in my third year. He was a great teacher, and was willing to help clarify things that may not have been so easily understood. After my time at UofW, I went into medical school, and the education he taught me sure helped make biochem a much easier subject. God bless you and keep you close Dr. T! - Posted by: Ian Cowan (Ex-student) on: Sep 11, 2018
