PHYLLIS LORETTA LAYNG October 15, 1920 - September 30, 2007 Her journey is over and she is at home with her Saviour, Jesus Christ. Beloved daughter of the late Eric and Adah Smeaton, Phyllis was born in Emerson, Manitoba. She was the younger sister of Doris Garden of Toronto and the late Donald Smeaton of Thunder Bay. Phyllis moved to Norwood, MB during her teens and later studied nursing in Toronto. In 1942 she married Gordon, her devoted husband of 65 years. Phyllis never returned to nursing but instead devoted her life to her family, her community, her church, and her friends. Mom was a strong swimmer and was known to be one of the first in the Red River as soon as the ice broke and in the winter, the river was her skating rink. Her love of both swimming and skating lasted all her life. In keeping with her Scottish roots, Mom curled in Winnipeg and later in B.C. As a member of St. Phillips Church, she devoted her time and energy to that parish and remained a member of the Mother's Union until her death. In 1983, Phyllis and Gordon moved to Richmond, BC to be with their children and grandchildren. Their life in BC has been happy and productive, with Mom spending many years volunteering for the Canadian Cancer Society in a variety of functions. As a survivor of breast cancer, she worked tirelessly to give hope to others. She will be eternally missed by her husband, Gordon, her two daughters, Carol-Ann (Clive) Jackson of West Vancouver and Susan Layng (Peter Grove) of Victoria and her precious grandchildren, Nathan, Erica and Katelin Owsianski and David-Simon Jackson. Our mother's love and her love of life are her legacy to us and we will carry her spirit in our hearts forever. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 13 at St. Edwards Anglican Church, 10111 Bird Rd. in Richmond. In lieu of flowers, donations to Doctors Without Borders or the BC Cancer Society, would be appreciated. Walkey Company Funeral Directors 604-738-0006.
