WALTER VICTOR SYVOLOS (WALLY) Walter was born on December 21, 1921 in the Western Ukraine. As a young boy, he immigrated to Canada with his mother Mary in 1930 where they joined his father Steven who had arrived earlier in 1928. The small family settled in the North End of Winnipeg, residing for many years at 900 Redwood Ave. Walter attended Strathcona, King Edward and then Isaac Newton schools. After completing his education, he enlisted with the RCAF and served overseas in the Second World War where he completed 37 missions as a mid-upper gunner on a Lancaster Bomber. On his return from the war, he married Teenie Smylski. Together, they built a home on Bannatyne Avenue in Brooklands where they would each live for the rest of their lives. Wally was employed at Markwell industries and later Trailmobile and finally Versatile Manufacturing, where he worked until his retirement. He was predeceased my wife Teenie in 1972 and wife Bernice (formerly Turchon), in 1986. Wally is survived by daughter Margaret Kahler, grandson Benjamin Kahler and his wife Lisa and great-grandchildren, Jake and Hannah as well as grandson Christopher Kahler and his wife Brenda. Walter was first and foremost a family man who loved to see his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He always greeted you with a friendly smile, a warm hug and, for the grandchildren, an allowance . He was a wonderfully generous man who would not think twice about lending a helping hand. His entire family will always know Walter, affectionately, as Gram'pa. A private, graveside ceremony and memorial service are planned. Cropo Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Winnipeg Humane Society or the Canadian Cancer Society.
