LOU FINGEROTE Suddenly early Monday morning, September 24, 2007, Lou Fingerote aged 81 years passed away. He was predeceased by his parents Penia and Sura Ita Fingerot, his brother Sam and sister-in-law Sharon, and his brother-in-law Frank Taran. He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 59 years Joyce, his sister Eva Taran, his children Rhonda Youell (Harry), Terri, and Barbara Krolik (Joseph), his grandchildren Richard, Ilana, Laura, Erin, Isaac, Eve and great-granddaughter Ella, as well as many nieces and nephews. Dad was born December 11, 1925 in the Ukraine. When he was only two, the family which included seven children, escaped the persecution of the Jewish people in Russia, fleeing to be with family in Winnipeg. Upon arriving in Canada, only three children remained, with Dad being the youngest. From that time on, Winnipeg was our father's home and his love of this city and our country never wavered. Dad attended Aberdeen School to age fourteen when he joined the workforce. His first job was selling the Free Press at the corner of Portage Avenue and Fort Street. At age seventeen, Dad joined the Navy and spent 1942-1945 posted in Nova Scotia. After returning to Winnipeg, Dad worked as a cutter in the garment industry. By 1957 Dad became an insurance agent for London Life and thrived in that career until 1960. Dad was never frightened by hard work; he was a loving caring gentle family man who would do whatever was necessary to ensure a good life for his wife and daughters. Dad became a partner with Harry Fishman at Mall Foods in 1960. His years at the Mall Foods, 1960-1978, were the happiest, most productive years of his life. After Dad and Harry sold the store in 1978, he continued to work part-time at S.I.R. Sporting Goods as a manager of the mail order department until 1992. Dad loved to bowl and curl, and continued to bowl well into his seventies. In his later years he enjoyed lunching with friends, playing poker, walking in the park and was an avid armchair fan of football, baseball and golf. Mom and Dad traveled together often as the years progressed. Their favourite destinations included London England, Hawaii, Palm Springs, and Israel. Dad's life was always full; he took great pleasure in his family. He never missed a milestone in his grandchildren's lives from birth to graduation, always happy and proud. At the center of our family dinners, Dad loved to share his stories, wisdom and love with us. Modestly leading holiday meals, Dad instilled the importance of family and togetherness. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, always reminding us the best thing he ever did was to marry our mom! Funeral services were held at Etz Chayim Synagogue Wednesday, September 26th with Rabbi Alan Green officiating. Burial took place at the Rosh Pina Memorial Park with his grandsons Richard and Isaac, and nephews Barry Taran, Dale Taran, Stuart Taran, Leonard Fingerote and Lloyd Baker as pallbearers Donations if desired may be sent to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Foundation. Dad, we love you and we will miss you always.
