BESSIE LICHTER Bessie Lichter passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on October 1, 2007 at the Simkin Centre. Bessie is lovingly remembered by her daughters and families: Joy and James Manishen of Winnipeg and Dr. Myrna Lichter and Jimmy Fuller of Toronto, grandchildren, Sarah and Ira Manishen, Bobby Fuller and Anne and David Gosset. She was predeceased by her husband Max, granddaughter Laura Fuller, siblings, Sam Altman, Hy Altman, Sue Greene, Rose Steiman and Joe Altman. Bessie is survived by her sister-in-law Jean Altman. She leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews who have wonderful memories of their Auntie Bessie. Bessie was born in Winnipeg on January 1, 1913 to Anna and Louis Altman. With her father's passing in 1918, Bessie learned with strength and grace to be resourceful and dependable. Bessie showed by example what it meant to be strong, innovative, truthful and committed to meeting whatever challenges life offered. She graduated from the commercial program at St. John's High School and began an 18-year career at the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1948, she married Max Lichter and they remained devoted to each other until Max's passing in 1989. The birth of their two daughters, Joy and Myrna, fulfilled their dreams. Bessie taught Bishop Sewing for many years at Community Schools in the Seven Oaks School Division and later worked for her brother-in-law Harry Greene at Greene's Fabric Fare. Bessie loved sewing, knitting, crocheting and cooking. She will long be remembered for her signature dessert, Apple Strudel. She was a member of Gwen Secter Stay Young group and enjoyed playing mahjong and bridge. Many thanks to the staff of the Simkin Centre, especially Jane, Trifona, Cathy and Cindy and the health care aides on the Olive Branch Unit for their tender care. Bessie's funeral took place October 2 at Shaarey Zedek Memorial Park, Rabbi Alan Green officiating. Pallbearers were James Manishen, Jim Fuller, Bobby Fuller, Dov Altman, Harold Steiman and Dr. Wayne Manishen. Donations in Bessie's memory may be made to the Simkin Centre, 1 Falcon Ridge Dr., Winnipeg, MB R3Y 1V9, 586-9781.
