JEAN ELIZABETH GREEN (NEE DUDLEY) Two days following her 75th birthday Jean finally lost the battle we knew she could never win. For more than seven years Alzheimer's disease gradually took her from us and she passed away, peacefully, at Heritage Lodge Personal Care Home on October 4, 2007 in the loving company of her family. She was predeceased by her parents, Nora and Allan, and her brother Edward (Ted) and is survived by her husband of 45 years, Roger, and their three sons, William (Laurie), David and Jonathan and grandchildren, Andrew and Mary-Katherine. Jean was born and raised in Winnipeg. Her education complete she traveled to continental Europe and later took another trip, this time to England. Just prior to the latter trip, her family moved to Toronto and in the summer of 1961, Jean returned to Winnipeg for a visit and, thanks to what was then Trans-Canada Airlines experiencing a problem with one of its aircraft, met her husband-to-be at a home on Ashcroft Point. In March 1962, Jean went back to England and was married to Roger on Easter Saturday at the Lord Mayor of London's Church, St Lawrence Jewry-next-Guildhall and later were the first commoners to ever hold a Wedding Reception in Guildhall. Roger's employer transferred him permanently to Winnipeg in July, 1962 and in February, 1964 the first of their three sons, William (Bill), was born. David followed in June, 1966 and Jonathan in December, 1968. As the boys grew, Jean became very active in their young lives. During the day Jean was always happy to volunteer, offering her time at the schools they attended and helping out at Heritage-Victoria Community Club. In the evenings she was their biggest fan, from bringing orange slices and water to the sidelines at their soccer games to making sure countless jerseys were kept in tip-top shape for hockey, not just for the boys but for their entire teams and teams Roger was involved with. Jean loved the outdoors and camping was a great part of family life, until the pool was installed in 1980. From tent to tent trailer the family camped from British Columbia to Southern Ontario and from Washington to Wisconsin. She also loved tending our flower and vegetable gardens (and became more than a little impatient with someone who tended to let weeds continue to grow). After the boys had moved on from organized sports, Jean turned her attention to ceramics, a hobby that saw the creation of many labors of love that have found their place in the homes of many friends and family members. Outside her family, what Jean loved most were animals, especially her dogs, Snoochie, Rascal and Freckles. How she agonized when two, for their own good, had to be put to sleep. She was also an avid bird watcher, spending many hours at Oak Hammock Marsh and at Fort Whyte when she wasn't tending to the bird bath and numerous feeders around the family home. Jean was a wonderful lady and, although she will be truly missed, we are happy for her that she has been released from such a dreadful disease. For more than three years, she was cared for wonderfully at Heritage Lodge and we are very grateful to the staff. It was touching to see so many staff members come by to visit Jean during her final days. Sincere thanks to Heritage Lodge, and thank you, too, to Dr. Ian Maharaj. Memorial donations may be made either to The Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent Road, Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3 or Westwood Vocational Centre Inc., 266A Linwood Street, Winnipeg MB R3J 2C6. Cremation has already taken place. BARDAL FUNERAL HOME 843 Sherbrook Street, 774-7474 Condolences: www.bardal.ca
