ANITA JOY WALKER (nee O'BRIEN) Peacefully, on October 9, 2007 at St. Boniface General Hospital, Joy passed away at age 87 with her family close by. Joy will be sadly missed by her children John (Joannie), Lynda (Rocky), Karen (Walter), Cindy, and Michael (Connie) and her grandchildren Ian and Andrea, Ryan and Scott, Michael, Paul, Melyssa, and David, Matthew and Steven. She is also survived by her sisters Gem (Victor), Yvonne, and Myrn (John), her sisters-in-law Betty and Thelma and brother-in-law Lawrence. She was predeceased by her husband Roger in 1992 and son-in-law Harrie in 2002. Born in Winnipeg, Joy was the second oldest of seven daughters of John and Annie O'Brien. She traveled to Boston for nursing training during the Second World War and was president of her nursing class. Later she served as a nurse with the Canadian Army. She kept up contact with her colleagues from training and nursing practice for many years afterwards. She and her husband met at Deer Lodge Hospital where he was being treated after a parachute accident. Their family lived on several military bases around the country during the early part of their marriage and then settled in Winnipeg. Joy was devoted to her family and had many happy stories of camping trips with two tents and five children in the family sedan. She and Roger enjoyed traveling together after his retirement and they had many happy times with their grandchildren also. The family would like to thank all of Joy's friends at Fort Garry Place and Lindenwood Manor for their support and encouragement over the years. We would also like to thank Dr. Maureen McConnell, the staff at Beacon Hill Lodge and St. Boniface Hospital for their care as she developed health problems over the years. A funeral service will be held at Thomson Funeral Home on Friday, October 12, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joy's memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
