ELSIE ELIZABETH HILL Elsie Elizabeth Hill passed away peacefully on Monday, October 15, 2007 at Victoria General Hospital. She was born in Winnipeg on July 25, 1907, the tenth of the eleven offspring of Jacob and Elizabeth Singbush. Her German Lutheran family emigrated to Canada from Zhitomir, Ukraine in 1895, and she was the last surviving member of that family. Elsie spent a good part of her life in the North End of Winnipeg, attending Aberdeen and St. John's Tech. She was the only member of her family to receive her high school diploma. On September 17, 1927, she married Jacob William (Bill) Hill and they spent many comfortable, happy years together until Bill's death in 1966. Bruce and Robert (Patricia) are her surviving children. A third child, John, died in infancy and daughter-in-law, Margaret, passed away in 2006. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and nana to her family, and took much pride in her six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Elsie was an active, positive person throughout her long life. Her career included employment with The T. Eaton Company and as a medical assistant in the Medical Arts Building. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a charter member of the Medical Assistants Association in Manitoba and a long time curler at the Granite Curling Club. She loved playing cards, whether it was poker with her family or friends, gin rummy with her curling teammates, or with her great-grandchildren when they came to visit with her. She was also an avid devotee of crossword puzzles and could complete even the most complex in lightning fashion. The afghans and sweaters that she knitted are liberally distributed amongst the homes of her offspring. She was always interested in the world around her and could be counted on for a friendly debate on politics or current affairs. She enjoyed travel and did not miss an opportunity to visit family in the far corners of the world including Australia, Kenya and Algeria. For the past 10 years she resided at Lion's Place, where she enthusiastically participated in the many social events. Never afraid to try something new, she tackled the computer in her late 90s and although often frustrated with its challenges, she nevertheless enjoyed e-mails from family and friends. She was an inspiration and will be sorely missed. We take comfort in the knowledge that she had a full life, living independently until the very end and making her own decisions as to how she wished to spend her final hours. In keeping with Elsie's wishes cremation has taken place and a private family service is planned. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.J COUTU CO.
