ELVA FLORENCE HUMPHRIES On Thursday, October 18, 2007 Elva Florence Humphries passed away in Winnipeg in her 95th year. Elva was predeceased by her parents Fredrick U. and Ann Maria Humphries, and by her sister Olive E. (and husband, Harold) Washburn. She is survived by her niece Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Lynch (and husband Eugene) of Redondo Beach, California, and by grandnephew and grandnieces Denis, Ardith and Marion Lynch and their families in California and Alaska. Elva was born and raised and attended public schools in Winnipeg. She studied at the University of Manitoba and received a B.Sc (Home Economics) degree in 1933, a Diploma in Education in 1937 and a B.Ed. degree in 1953. In 1945-46 she was an International Fellow in Health Education of the W. R. Kellogg Foundation at the University of Michigan and received the degree of Master of Public Health. Elva pursued a career in education with the Winnipeg School Division over 37years, teaching at St. John's and Churchill High Schools, and latterly, serving as Coordinator of Home Economics for the Division. She retired in 1975. World travel was a major interest throughout Elva's life. She traveled in Great Britain and Europe on many occasions (including a memorable trip to London on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth's coronation in 1953) and she visited South and Central America, India and many parts of Canada and the United States. In her retirement, Elva's flower garden at her Winnipeg residence was a particular source of pride and pleasure. Other special interests included the McKinnon Guild and the University Women's Club of Winnipeg. Special thanks to the dedicated staff at the Charleswood Care Centre who provided Elva with kind and compassionate care during the difficult final years of her life. Cremation has taken place with interment at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. In accordance with Elva's wishes a private family memorial will be held at a later date.
