WILLIAM (BILL) JAMES HORNE Peacefully, at Oakview Place on the evening of Friday, October 12, 2007 William (Bill) James Horne passed away at 90 years of age Bill was born in Winnipeg to Annie and James Horne on February 16, 1917. He grew up in the Fort Rouge area, attending Lord Roberts School and graduating from Kelvin High School. During the Second World War, Bill joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and became a flight instructor traveling to bases across Canada training RAF pilots. When the war ended Bill returned to his job at the Winnipeg Post Office. During his tenure he was given the opportunity to serve as the official Mail Carrier to Princess Elizabeth during her 1951 visit and he also developed the mail routes in Wildwood Park. Bill worked his way through various positions from Letter Carrier to Staffing Specialist for the Manitoba region, retiring in 1975 with more than 30 years of service. Bill and Hilda were married in 1941 and lived for more than 50 years on Bartlett Avenue in Fort Rouge. Together they raised three children and Dad was very supportive of all of our activities; everything from football to dancing. Dad and Mom also found time to enjoy square dancing with the Allouettes and Dad even tried calling . He was a member of the Heritage Club and the Canadian Legion. During retirement, Bill kept busy with golf, renovations and woodworking both at home and at the beach. His grandchildren will always remember the Popa-made toy boxes and art easels. Bill's two favourite places were Victoria Beach and Hawaii. He took great delight, well into his 80's, in riding his bike right down the centre of the avenue going to pick up the mail or check on his car in the parking lot. Bill and Hilda spent many happy winter months in Hawaii, returning year after year to their friends at the Ilima Hotel. Bill was predeceased by Hilda, his loving wife of 65 years, his brotherin-law Art Cook and his nephew Don Cook. He is survived by daughters Dianne Sallans and Corinne (Jack) Sorenson; son Jamie (Sharon); sister Betty Cook; and niece Carolynne (Ken). Popa will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Cindy and Shauna (Doug) Sallans, Jason, Todd (Peggy), Ian and Ryan Sorenson, Riley and Taylor Horne; great-grandchildren, Danielle and the newly arrived Callum and Logan. A private family service will be held at Victoria Beach Cemetery. Friends of the family are invited to Corinne and Jack's home at 3 Colebrook Drive on Saturday, November 3 from 2:30 5:00 p.m. to share memories and celebrate Bill's life. Bill's family would like to thank the staff on 3 West at Extendicare/Oakview Place where Bill had resided for the past four years. Your professional, compassionate and loving care has been greatly appreciated.
