STEFAN ILYNIAK 1921 - 2007 Suddenly but peacefully, after a lengthy illness, Stefan Ilyniak passed away on Friday morning October 26, 2007. Stefan was predeceased by his parents, Dmytro and Magdalina in Ukraine and two brothers Jacob and Mychajlo. Stefan was born in the village of Verbivka, Western Ukraine on June 12, 1921. He spent his childhood and young adulthood in a war-ridden Ukraine where he experienced many hardships and personal losses. In 1942 he spent two years in a forced labor camp in Germany. Upon his release in 1945 he met and married his wife of 60 years, Rosalia Hawrylow. They immigrated to Belgium where he worked in the coal mines and later immigrated to Canada with their young daughter Magdalina in October of 1951. Stefan was always grateful to call Canada home, which he believed to be a golden country of opportunity . Their two sons Mike and Gerry were born in Winnipeg where the family happily settled and became very active in the Ukrainian Catholic community. He worked and retired from CNR after 32 years of faithful service. Stefan and the family became very active in the Cathedral of Sts. Vladimir and Olga where he was a member and past president of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada. He was a member of the Ukrainian Institute Prosvita as well as the Millenium Choir. He was also active in the Ukrainian Canadian Legion, Branch 141 and served with the Knights of Columbus. He will be sadly missed by his dear wife, Rosalia; daughter Maggie (Richard) Harrison of Winnipeg; grandson Nicholas (Brenda) Kaczor and great-grandsons, Jeremy and Logan of Edmonton; son Mike (Anna) and grand-daughters, Natalia and Eva and son Gerry and grand-daughters Carissa and Hillary of Winnipeg. The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff of the 4th floor of Beacon Hill Lodge for their warm and compassionate care for the short time he was with them. Prayers will be sung 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 30 at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor Street. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 31 also at the Cathedral with Rt. Rev Msgr. Mitrat Michael Buyachok and Protodeacon Michael Woroby officiating.
