MATHILDA (MATTIE) VALENTINE SIGFUSSON On the evening of October 27, 2007, at E.M. Crowe Hospital in Eriksdale, Mattie left this life with her family at her side, knowing she would be at peace. Remaining to ever cherish her memory are her loving husband Siggi of 67 years and children Brian (Hope) and their two sons Dwayne (Trudi) Brett, Teneille, Tatum of Grande Prairie, AB; Grant (Michele) Blake, Alexis, Ashley, Emily; David (Pat) and their two sons Warren (Cheri) Leif of Winnipeg; Wade (Jennifer) Hayley, Abbey; Ellen (Jim) Gleich, and their children Curtis, Kyle and Vanessa. Mattie was predeceased by son Thomas and grandson Brent and her parents Oddur and Sigrun (Thorkelson) Oddson as well as sisters Verna and Christine and brother Allan. Mattie was born February 14, 1921, in Lundar where she lived all of her 86 years with the exception of one year in Chicago. On June 1, 1940, she married Siggi and they celebrated their 65th anniversary in 2005. Mattie loved the small town life, devoting her time to family, and her many close friends especially older people. She was a devoted member of the Ladies Aid Bjork; at the bake sales you could always find Mattie in charge of the knitting and sewing table. She gave many memorable speeches while presenting the Ladies Aid Scholarship at High School graduations. Mattie was a member of the Ladies section of the Lundar Ag. Society Fair. As a member of the Museum Board she shared many of her treasures in the Museum. For many years Mattie shared her artistic abilities with the community by decorating the halls for many of the bridal showers held there. In her later years, she enjoyed her role as the Special Features Chairperson for Christian Women's Club and was also a member of the Lutheran Church. Mattie was a loving and caring person reaching out to those in need in any way she could. She loved to bake the Icelandic treats vinetarta, ponnukokur and kleinurs, sharing them with the grandchildren, neighbourhood kids and others. Many relatives received quilts that she lovingly embroidered. She expressed her loyalty by writing letters to her far away relatives and friends. Mattie loved her Icelandic heritage particularly the language and always claimed that her stories were funnier in Icelandic. She was a natural comedian and loved to tell stories, entertaining everyone who came to see her in her last days. She was committed to leave a memory of love for others. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the Eriksdale Hospital staff for the exceptional care that they gave Mattie and also to everyone for visits, cards, flowers and prayers. She was surrounded by love. In keeping with Mattie's wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will take place at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 3 at Lundar Lutheran Church with Pastor Terry Throndson presiding. Interment to follow in the Lundar Municipal Cemetery. The pallbearers will be her six grandsons. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Lundar Lutheran Church, or to a charity of one's choice. Goda nott elskin.
