DOUGLAS URIAH GRAY Douglas passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 29, 2007 at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Birdielyn, three sons Douglas (Gloria), Donovan (Janet) and Robin; grandchildren Marc, Ellen, Kristen and Alanna; siblings Mervyn, Pearl and Eileen; several nieces, nephews and cousins, and mother-in-law Doris Smith. He was predeceased by parents Walter and Edith, and brothers Ronald and Claude. Douglas was born in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica in 1927. After attending Mico Teacher's College in Kingston he taught in St. James and Kingston before immigrating to Bermuda with Birdielyn in 1961. Six years later they moved to Quebec where Doug continued teaching at the high school level. In the early 1970s the family returned to Jamaica where he joined the Ministry of Education as an Education Officer. In 1981 the family moved to Manitoba where he served northern communities as a teacher, principal and later as a Director of Education. Douglas was an enthusiastic fisherman, gardener and cricket fan. He also enjoyed keeping up with Jamaican current events and having lively debates on a variety of topics with his wide circle of friends. He will be sadly missed by many. A service of remembrance will be held on Friday, November 9, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. in Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray with Rev. Dr. Scott Bullerwell officiating. The family would like to thank Drs. Roy Smith and Paddy Griffin as well as the Victoria General Hospital ER and ICU for their exceptional care of Douglas over the years.
