MIRIAM BRAUN February 4, 1933 - November 5, 2007 Miriam Braun, age 74, passed away at the Riverview Health Centre on November 5, 2007. She was predeceased by her mother Sarah (Giesbrecht) Braun in 1941, her father William J. Braun in 1963, her brother Ted Braun in 1988, as well as a nephew in infancy and brother-in- law Harry Brown. Recipients of her warmth and kindness are seven brothers and three sisters, Bill (Susan) Braun, Ed (Tina) Braun, Elsie Brown, Carl (Evelyn) Braun, Ernie (Anne) Braun, Dora (Abe) Friesen, Albert (June) Braun, Leo Braun, Adeline Braun, and Norman (Johanna) Braun. Sharing the loss are numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends. Miriam's illness became apparent in the fall of 2003 - just before leaving on a European vacation. Upon her return she was diagnosed with incurable cancer. In spite of her very gentle and kind spirit she vigorously pursued all options and embarked on an unbelievably courageous battle with the disease. Against all odds and predictions, her extension of life , as she called it, would offer many rich times with friends and family. However, during the last several months, her bodily health declined rapidly. She was born in Burwalde where she received most of her elementary and high school education. A member of a motherless family, she followed the family tradition and spent several years on the farm as chief domestic engineer in a large household - cooking countless meals, gardening, canning, providing laundry services, babysitting nieces and nephews, and so much more. A teacher at heart, she earned her teaching certificate at the Normal School in Winnipeg, and through a combination of summer schools and correspondence courses (University of Manitoba), and a year at the University of Western Ontario she earned her B.A., B.Ed. And M.L.Sc. Although her professional journey began in rural Southern Manitoba, she spent most of her teaching career as a teacher/ librarian with the St. Vital School Division. Her deep faith was solidly rooted in God. It was lived more than verbalized. It was highly evident in her generosity, her desire for healthy relationships, and her positive attitude. Although she was a rather private person, she valued family immensely and was an active promoter and supporter of family get-togethers. She was known for her chocolate contributions! She had a keen interest in traveling, golfing, table games - particularly scrabble - reading, and promoting literacy. She took early retirement to enable her to work as a volunteer, particularly in the area of literacy, and to enroll in a wide range of classes at the University of Winnipeg. Miriam fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith. Now she has departed for the that beautiful place she was longing for. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 8, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Mennonite Church, 870 Carter Ave., Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or M.C.C., 134 Plaza Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3T5K9. The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent care provided by the staff of CancerCare Manitoba, Women's Hospital and Riverview Health Centre; also her very special neighbour Liz Gallagher.
