SIDNEY BRUCE HANSON October 5, 1945 November 3, 2007 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sidney Bruce Hanson. On Saturday, November 3, 2007, with his family by his side, Sidney, aged 62 years, passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Sidney will be lovingly remembered and very sadly missed by his wife, Anita Bixo, and all his extended family, sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews and all of his friends. He was predeceased by his father Olaf, his mother Hilma, who were both born in Sweden and immigrated to Canada, and also by his sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Mike Pitts. Sidney was the youngest of seven children. He is survived by sister, Dagmar (Alex) Beattie of Broadview, SK, Sylvia (Dave) Elliott of Grenfell, SK, three brothers, Douglas (Iris) Hanson of Broadview, SK, Harvey (Lorraine) Hanson of Dauphin, MB, Glen (Jean) of Saskatoon, SK and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by three aunts in Sweden, Marie Uvland, Ingrid Wallehed, Britt Bixo and numerous cousins in Sweden and Canada. Sidney moved to Winnipeg in 1967, after graduating from high school. A short time later he started his career with the Province of Manitoba. He worked in the mapping division and was involved with the Digital Topographic Mapping in the late 1980s. He also helped generate G.I.S. data for Provincial drains for the water resources branch. He retired after 38 plus years of service in July of 2005. Sidney enjoyed sailing in his early years and enjoyed golfing, curling and photography. His love for gardening led to a beautiful garden with recognition in The Manitoba Gardener Magazine. Sidney produced many fine pieces of furniture for his home and helped many other friends and relatives with building projects, both in Canada and Sweden. He was always prepared, with hammer in hand to help whenever and wherever needed. He also loved camping and spent many weekends around the rivers and lakes of Manitoba with Anita and with various friends and relatives. He loved to travel and was looking forward to doing this after his retirement. He traveled to Sweden many times visiting many relatives and enjoyed it immensely. Some of his travels took him to many parts of Europe, most recently to Italy, which he really enjoyed. He also traveled in the United States and covered a good portion of Canada. Sidney was very active in the Winnipeg Swedish Community and was proud of his Swedish heritage. He loved to bake Swedish Rye bread for various fundraising functions. All of his nieces and nephews will miss him terribly as he was always very interested in the things they were involved with and he thought of them as his own children. He was very conscientious and was always more concerned about other peoples' welfare rather than his own. Funeral services will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church at 600 Cambridge St. Winnipeg, on Friday, November 16, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. Interment of the ashes will be held at Percival Saskatchewan at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, P.O. Box 2248, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4A6 (online; www.cancercare.mb.ca) or to the Palliative Care Unit at St. Boniface Hospital, 409 Tache Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R2H 9Z9. In tears we saw you sinking, We watched you fade away, You suffered much in silence, You fought so hard to stay. You faced your task with courage, Your spirit did not bend, But still you kept on fighting Until the very end. God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be, So He put His arms around you, And whispered, Come with Me. So when we saw you sleeping So peaceful, free from pain, We could not wish you back, To suffer that again. WE LOVE YOU SIDNEY YOU WILL ALWAYS BE WITH US neil bardal inc 949-2200 nbardal.mb.ca
