EUNICE (PENNY) SCHMITT (nee NICKEL) It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dear Mother and Grandmother Eunice Penny Schmitt (nee Nickel) on Thursday, November 8, 2007 at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg. Remaining to forever cherish Penny's memory are her sons John and Paul; Grandson Joseph; as well as numerous loving nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. She was predeceased by her Husband Bill; siblings, Alvin Nick , Blanche, Margaret and Jack. Mom was born in Long Beach, CA and raised in Waldheim, SK where she met our Father and eventually moved to Arborfield, SK where they were married and began their family. A child of the depression, Mom never forgot what it was like to be without and spent her life raising her family with love and making sure that others less fortunate or handicapped received as much as she could physically give. If there were pictures in the dictionary there would be one of Mom beside the word volunteer. Throughout her life she shared with her Husband a love for curling, bridge, tennis, entertaining and travel and most of all the joy of her wonderful extended family. Her personal happiness came from gardening, creating intricate skilled crafts for others, her involvement with the United Church Women's groups, the Church Choir, volunteering at Oakview Place, providing meals for the homeless, the Children's Hospital Book Fair and most of all taking care of babies, no matter who's they were or where they came from. Penny's funeral service will be held on Monday, November 12 at 1:00 p.m. in the Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive. The family would like to extend appreciation for the staff of the Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts, the staff of Ward 3 at the Grace Hospital and the Convalescent Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mom's memory to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, 10 - 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 4G2.
