Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMURIEL MARGUERITE JOHNSTONE 1912 - 2007 On Friday, November 9, 2007, at the Riverview Health Centre, Muriel passed away and is now with her beloved husband, Doug. Right to the end she was surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her daughter Marilyn Loewen (Russ); her son Jim (Lynn); her granddaughter Robin (Andrew Buchanan); nieces and nephews, Carlisle, Leona, Daryn, and Addison Wright; Ed and Helen Hughes; Buster and many other cherished friends. She was predeceased by her parents Duncan and Christianne MacLennan; sisters, Rachel and Catherine; brothers, Rory, Rod and Johnny, and a baby brother who died at four days old. Muriel was born and raised in Mather, MB, where she lived until she started working as a secretary in the Mail Order department of Dear Old Eaton's in Winnipeg. Shortly after she moved to Winnipeg, she began going out with her soul mate - the love of her life - Doug, for whom she waited six long years for his return from the war. Muriel and Doug were married on October 10, 1945 and started their family in Delia, AB, moving to Silverton, MB, in 1948 and to Decker in 1950. Muriel ran the family grocery store while Doug started the family farm. In 1958 they sold the store and she directed all her energy to her family and the farm. In 1967 Muriel and Doug moved to Winnipeg where Muriel nursed Doug back to health while they worked as building superintendents in different Winnipeg apartment buildings. Muriel stayed active with the Eastern Star where she rose to the office of Worthy Matron of the St. James Chapter. In retirement she stayed active in the church and took up bridge. She loved winter holidays in Texas, Phoenix, Jamaica, Hawaii, and Victoria. They made two trips back to Europe that included remembrance services in France for the Dieppe Raid. Wherever Muriel and Doug lived, they developed lifelong friendships which she cherished to the end. In every new community, Muriel was active in the church, UCW and Eastern Star. She enjoyed many activities including horseback riding in her early years, and curling in the winter. Volunteering was always a major part of her daily life. Muriel's family would like to thank her relatives and friends for their love and support through her long journey. Also thank you to the medical staff at the various health care facilities that helped give her some quality of life as things became harder for her. A special thank you goes out to all the staff of CD-4 at Riverview Health Centre. Words cannot express our appreciation for the love and care Mom received. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. in Thomson In the Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., Winnipeg.
