RUBY MARY ELIZABETH BENWELL It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the passing of Ruby on November 15, 2007. She was predeceased by her husband Mathew Bennie in 1970, her parents, David and Pearl Curran (Colburn); brothers, Garnet, William and Lloyd; stepfather Harold Bartlett and nephew Robert Curran. Aunt Ruby was born September 19, 1922 in Winnipeg. She married Uncle Bennie, the little bloke from England', June 29, 1946. She entered the work force following Uncle Bennie's death, employed by Laura Secord Chocolates until her retirement in 1988. This likely accounts for the chocoholic condition of several family members. Aunt Ruby's tenacity allowed her to remain in her own home until the end, planting a garden each year, harvesting and preserving an amazing bounty from a tiny plot. She enjoyed annual get togethers with the Laura Secord Ladies, weekly bingo, jaunts to the family cottage at Winnipeg Beach. She made two trips to Disney World with David and friend Joyce Hoskins in the 80s, and to BC to see Uncle Billy and companion Hazel Hughes. Ruby is survived by her niece Marion (Maurice) Mearon, great-nieces, Heather and Sarah Mearon; nephew David Curran; nephew Bradley Curran; niece Pamela (Mitch) LaDelle, great-niece Lynelle and great-nephew Ferral LaDelle. She is also survived by daughter Valerie (Darryle) O'Connor; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Our family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of Victoria Lifeline and Victoria General Hospital for their compassion during our aunt's final illness. A special thank you to neighbors Clem Peppel, Hans and Marlis Gronwald for their friendship, caring and support over the years. Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 22 at Thomson In The Park Funeral Chapel, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. Interment to follow at Waverley Memorial Gardens, 1501 Waverley Street. In lieu of flowers, donations to CancerCare Manitoba or MADD in Ruby's memory would be warmly welcomed.
