MARIE DOUGLAS (nee HAMES) 1914 - 2007 With her family at her side, Marie Douglas passed away peacefully in her own apartment at Fred Douglas Place on Sunday, November 18, 2007. Although she was enormously proud to be known at Mrs. Fred Douglas, Marie was a strong and determined person in her own right. Born in Glenboro, Manitoba, she learned from her father to love baseball and curling and followed those sports all of her life. Graduating from Wesley College, she taught school until her marriage to Fred brought her into her new career of minister's wife. St. Andrews (Elgin Ave.) and Crescent Fort Rouge United Churches were her church communities in Winnipeg. Winnipeg was home through most of her adult life with brief times of residence in Thunder Bay and Toronto. Just as Marie continued to love Fred who predeceased her, she will be loved by her sons, Peter (Elsie) and David (Lynn) of Grand Bend, Ontario; by her grandsons, Scott (Nanette), Andrew (Anna), Ben and Matt; and by her great-grandsons, Noah and Nathan. She is also deeply missed by her sisters, Ellen Shand in Summerland, BC, and Betty Schmitt in Springfield, Ohio, and by her nephews and nieces. Funeral services will take place at Crescent Fort Rouge United Church on Thursday, November 22, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. Flowers are declined with thanks. Rather, you are invited to make a donation if you so desire to the Fred Douglas Foundation (1275 Burrows Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2X 0B8) or to the Mission and Service Fund of your local United Church of Canada.
