MICHAEL KUZMINSKI Peacefully, with family by his side, Michael Kuzminski, of Winnipeg, passed away at Concordia Hospital on Sunday, November 18, 2007, the day after his 85th birthday. Michael will be lovingly remembered by Mary, his devoted wife of 52 years; son Greg (Kim), and their children Christopher and Caroline; daughters Kathy (Gary) Bailley, and Margaret all of Winnipeg; sister Kay Billey of Windsor, Ontario; sister-in-law Jean Kuzminski of Selkirk, Manitoba; many relatives and cherished friends. Michael was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Pauline Kuzminski; brother John and sister-in-law Elsie; infant brother Nicholas; and brother-in-law Matt Billey. Michael was born on November 17, 1922, in East Selkirk, Manitoba. During his early years, he worked in the family market gardening business. In 1943, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a heavy equipment operator in the Yukon. After the war, Michael returned to the family farm in East Selkirk. In 1952, Michael relocated to Winnipeg and worked in the construction industry, most notably as a crane and heavy equipment operator. In 1958, he joined the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 901. In 1967, Michael was elected their Business Manager, a position he held until his retirement in 1986. He was a tenacious man who fought for the rights and better working conditions of others. Michael was well known and respected among all building trades, contractors, and brothers of the I.U.O.E. In retirement, Michael explored his many interests. He was always planning his next project or assisting with charitable fund raising events. The Knights of Columbus, St. Josaphat's Council and Canon Luhovy 4th Degree Assembly provided Michael with an outlet for his need to continue to serve and assist others. He led St. Josaphat's Council as their Grand Knight from 1993 to 1995. Michael was a director of the Columbus Centennial Centre and of St. Josaphat Selo-Villa Senior's Complex. He also enjoyed his 4th Degree honour guard duties. Michael's love of his family was an important part of his life, which was filled with happiness and adventure. Michael and Mary traveled extensively throughout North America, and abroad, when possible, with family. Since 1970, the cottage in Traverse Bay, Manitoba provided a regular retreat for family gatherings. Many celebrations were enjoyed together over the years. Michael was a founding member of St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church, having helped build the original church in 1960 and assisting with the construction of the present church in 1983. He had a deep devotion to God and lived by his faith every day of his life. The family would like to thank Dr. Paul Sawchuk and staff of Concordia Hospital for their care and compassion, as well as Dr. Joseph A. Silvaggio and GA5 Health Sciences Centre Staff. Prayers will be held on Thursday, November 22 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church, 455 Douglas Ave. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, November 23 at 10:00 a.m. also at the Church with Rt. Rev. Canon Walter Klimchuk officiating. Interment to follow in All Saints Cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews Lloyd, John, and Jim Kuzminski, grandchildren Christopher and Caroline Kuzminski, and son-in-law Gary Bailley. If so desired, donations may be made in Michael's memory to the St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church Building Fund or to a charity of your choice. Forever in our hearts VICHNAYA PAM'YAT CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044

  • What a full and faith-filled life Uncle Mike lived! I will always remember what a fun time we had in Winnipeg in July 2005, with Aunt Mary and Uncle Mike showing us around "The Forks", Louis Riel's statue and the "Golden Boy" on top of the Legislative Building. It was a terrific way to spend the afternoon. Love and prayers to the Kuzminski family. Bonnie (Byskal) and Daniel Bernier - Posted by: Bonnie Byskal-Bernier (Family) on: Nov 21, 2007
