CHANGE IN TIME OF PRAYERS IRENE DOWHAN It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Irene Dowhan, age 94, on Thursday, November 22, 2007 at the Holy Family Nursing Home. Irene was born on January 29, 1913, in the village of Kryvytsia, Rava Ruska, Western Ukraine. She was the youngest of three daughters of Michael and Kateryna Kuc (Prystupa). Between the ages of 13 and 19, she lost both her parents and both her sisters. The sisters, both dying in early 20's of tuberculosis, left behind three small children which Irene had to raise on her own. Irene met John Dowhan and they married in 1934. They had two daughters, Sylvia and Kathy. In 1947, the family was forcefully relocated to Northern Poland. In 1958, the family came to Canada and settled in Winnipeg where they started a new life. Irene worked in the garment industry. She enjoyed embroidery, sewing and knitting. She and her husband were members of Institute Prosvita, Ukrainian Canadian Congress, and Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral for 49 years. Irene was predeceased by John, her husband of 65 years and son-in-law Paul. She leaves to mourn her two daughters, Sylvia (George) Sharaburak of Winnipeg, Kathy Timpson of Montreal; granddaughter Oksana (Peter) Zmiyiwsky of Edmonton; grandson George (Olena) Sharaburak; great-grandchildren, Adrian, Oles and Markian Zmiyiwsky of Edmonton; brother-in-law Gregory (Parania) and family of Toronto; cousin, Irene Jamrog and her family of Boston and her extended family in Ukraine. Panakhyda will be sung 6:30 p.m. Thursday, November 29 at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 30 also at the Cathedral with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat M. Buyachok officiating.
