GEORGE ARTHUR GILMOUR 1916 - 2007 Greeting every day with a smile, a song, sometimes a dance and preferably a full breakfast reflected the enthusiasm that George Gilmour brought to his life and relationships. George was born the youngest of 11 children and raised in Montreal, QC. He joined the RCAF in 1940 and was stationed in Winnipeg with the Commonwealth Air Crew Training Program #3 Wireless School. There he met and courted Iris Greenfield. They married in May of 1945. Starting out in Montreal, they soon returned to settle in Winnipeg where George was employed as Secretary-Treasurer for Perth's Dye Works until 1984. They raised their three children in Wildwood Park, thoroughly enjoying all aspects of this tightly-knit community. Following his lifelong love of tennis, he and Iris played regularly at the Wildewood, Winnipeg Lawn Tennis, Victoria Beach and Taylor Tennis clubs. He served as president for the Wildewood Club, Tennis Manitoba, and was active for years in the Manitoba Tennis Patrons Association, Winter Club and Victoria Beach tennis community. He was particularly touched to receive the tennis volunteer of the year award at Victoria Beach in 2006. George's favourite place was the cottage at Victoria Beach. Following Iris's death in October 2000, he moved to Victoria, BC, but was still able to spend his summers at the cottage. Friends and family were extremely important to George and he particularly delighted in spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed all visits, whether it was a coffee on the deck, happy hour or a chat beside the tennis courts. After a long life full of love, family and friendship, George passed away at the age of 91 in Victoria, BC on November 25, 2007. George is survived by his children, Gary, Sandy and Kimberley; Gary's family of Winkler, MB; his wife Penny and children, Lisa (Neil), Daniel and Claire; Kimberley's husband Jeff Nemrava of Victoria, BC; his brother Jack Gilmour in Montreal and extended family across Canada and the United States. The past few summers at the cottage were made possible by regular visits and support of so many of George's friends from the Victoria Beach community. Our heartfelt thanks to you for your kindness to making his time there so memorable. In keeping with George's wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life gathering will be held at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2007. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice or to the Canadian Red Cross, where George was a volunteer.
