MICHAEL GEMBEY Michael Gembey, age 87 years, died of cancer on Monday, November 26, 2007 at the Grace Hospice with his wife Dolly by his side. Left to mourn are his wife Dolly; his nephew Kenneth (Gail) McKenzie of Kamloops, BC and niece Margaret (Larry) Shewchuk of LeDuke, Alberta, and his extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters, one brother and their spouses. Michael was born in 1920 in Transcona, joining the Navy as an Able Seaman in 1940 and was released in 1945. He began his career at Canadian National Railway (CNR) in January 1948. Michael married Delores Westerlund, the love of his life, in November 1952. They then set up home in Charleswood where they have resided until the present. Michael retired from the CNR after 38 years of service in August of 1985. Michael had a great mind. He carefully thought out projects and problem solved them carefully. He had a great memory and could relate areas travelled throughout the world - a beautiful story teller. His favourite hobbies were cruising, visiting and seeing the culture and terrain of other countries. He loved reading newspapers and keeping up with world affairs. Together with his wife, in 1984, they established the Dolly and Michael Gembey Research Fund to support nursing research at the Health Sciences Centre. Michael and Dolly established a Nursing Endowment Fund at the Health Sciences Centre Research Foundation in 1999 and in 2006 they established a Nursing Centre of Excellence to facilitate nurses in their research. Dolly would like to give her heartfelt thanks to Dr. Lipschitz and the other medical staff involved in Michael's care and all the wonderful nursing staff on H-3 who gave Michael care throughout his stay at Health Sciences Centre.
