OLIVE BJORG MCCAINE (nee PETERSON) November 2, 1921 November 19, 2007 It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Olive McCaine, 86, at Concordia Hospital. Olive was predeceased by husband Gordon; daughter Heather Davies; grandson Alfred Davies; sisters Thora McCaine and Jona (Tootsie) James; brothers Joe, Kenny and Denny. Left to mourn are son Terrance McCaine of Canmore, AB; daughter Susan McCaine; granddaughters, Jodis McCaine and Kristen Davies (Tyler Lane); grandson Michael Davies of Vancouver, BC; great-grandchildren, Reilly Davies and Talitha Lane; sister Margaret Kroft; brother Laurie Peterson of Sault Ste. Marie, ON; as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. Olive was the second of eight children born to parents Johann and Kristbjorg Peterson. Her Icelandic roots were a source of great pride to her and she often recalled happy memories of growing up in Selkirk, MB. On July 3, 1942, she married the love of her life Gordon Robert McCaine. They lived in Vancouver during the war years and later settled in East Kildonan where they raised their three children. Olive loved caring for her family and home. She was a skilled seamstress and spent many hours creating fashionable outfits for her family and decorative accessories for her home. Another passion was cooking and Olive hosted many family gatherings. The menu might even include Icelandic delicacies such as Rullupylsa, a savory lamb dish, and Vinaterta, an Icelandic prune cake. Always a vibrant, active woman, Olive enjoyed sports speed skating as a young girl, then bowling and curling with Gord, and later on her own, at Rossmere Country Club winning many bonspiel titles. When she no longer played the sports, she continued to avidly watch them on television, particularly tennis and curling. Although relaxing was rarely one of Olive's activities, she enjoyed spending summers with family and friends at The Hut the cottage in Winnipeg Beach. The area was also a link to her Icelandic heritage. After Gord's death, Olive travelled extensively with her sister, Thora, and friends to many far-off places Hawaii, Spain, Holland, the Caribbean, and such fun in later years at Shooting Star. But her favourite journey was to Iceland in 1998 because it felt like going home. She was a beloved mother, amma and langamma. Her last years were spent caring for her great-grandchildren (and rescuing many of their injured stuffed toys), joyously romping on the floor with them and watching with pride as they mastered each hurdle growing up. We'll miss her smile that could light up a room, but it remains forever in our hearts. In accordance with Olive's wishes, no service will be held. Cremation has taken place.
