DOROTHY EADIE SCHNITMAN Ever the adventurer, Dorothy took her final journey on December 1, 2007, at the age of 93 years. At her side, to ease her passage, were her loving family; daughter Jessica Kowall, brother Edwin Eadie Jr., and sister-in-law Virginia Eadie. Also left to cherish her memory are her beloved grandson Jeffrey, son-in-law Miles, sister-in-law Martha Eadie, brother-in-law Sol Gruber and numerous nieces, nephews and friends both in the United States and Canada. Dorothy was predeceased by her devoted husband of 44 years, Jacob, in 1985, her brother Henry, her father Edwin, stepmother Helen and sister-in-law Beatrice Gruber (nee Schnitman). It is a particular comfort to know that Dorothy will be reunited with all these and her mother Bertha, who died in childbirth. Dorothy was born October 4, 1914, in Mt. Vernon, New York. She found her first calling in the sciences, pursuing a career in laboratory technology. Dorothy managed many hospital laboratories in the greater New York area. This is where she met her beloved husband, Jack, an intern at the time. They were wed on December 25, 1941, whereupon they left for Ft. Sill in Oklahoma in preparation for Jack's deployment overseas. The war years brought 11 changes of station ranging from Camp Drum in Watertown, NY to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. Dorothy's second career evolved out of one of her passions, books. Learning some rudimentary book mending skills through her volunteering in school libraries, Dorothy eventually advanced to a position at the State University of New York in Purchase. There she was trained and assisted in the processing and preservation of fine art books and rare manuscripts. Family meant the world to Dorothy. She made a wonderful home for Jack and Jessica. Whether she was hosting family gatherings or entertaining friends, every detail was attended to and the food was abundant. Dorothy was a great support to her aging parents and numerous elderly aunts who needed assistance. She took a keen interest in her daughter's accomplishments, and also those of her nieces, nephews and grandson, always trying to nurture their abilities. Dorothy loved to travel, as did Jack. As a family, road trips were frequent, and over the years almost every state and many Canadian provinces were visited. Reading and the New York Times crossword puzzles were favourite pastimes. Dorothy always completed the Sunday crossword before the allotted time limit. Dorothy passed on her love of classical music and singing to her daughter. In living so close to Manhattan, there were regular outings to museums, concerts and plays. Dorothy joined Jessica and her family in Winnipeg after Jack's death. Here she made new friends, had more adventures and enjoyed seeing her grandson mature into a fine, young man. Unfortunately, her last seven years brought many challenges; first with a stroke and then the onset of vascular dementia. She met these adversities with grace and humour, always thankful for the care and support that she received from so many individuals. She will be sorrily missed. In accordance with Dorothy's wishes, a family, graveside service will take place, at a later date, in New York. However, Winnipeg family and friends are invited to drop-in to share some remembrances and refreshments on Friday, December 7, between the hours of 3:00 and 9:00 p.m., at the Kowall residence. Should friends desire, donations may be made in Dorothy's memory to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or the Winnipeg Humane Society.
