HELEN CATHERINE SHEWCHUK (nee SIANCHUK) Peacefully, and with her family at her side our mother passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2007. She was born in 1923 in Sandy Lake, MB, to Hillary and Catherine Sianchuk, the youngest of three children. She met and later married Walter Shewchuk on August 11, 1945. They hade nine wonderful children. Mom was always known for her open heart and warm hospitality, friends and family were always welcome and treated to fabulous meals. As if nine children weren't enough, numerous cousins were always welcome and spent many summer vacations at the Shewchuk farm. Fond memories are in the minds of many who experienced mom and her wonderful ways. No one left her house hungry or without leftovers. She was also known for her cleanliness and survived many years on the farm with young children and no running water or hydro. She kept her house immaculate and there was nothing in a drawer that wasn't folded, ironed and placed perfectly in a row. She was also very stubborn and her determination and desire to live, even after life's challenges, gave her many more joyous years to enjoy family, friends and new grandchildren. This mindset was with her until her last breath. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Walter; her parents, her sister Lilian, her brother Steve and her son-in-law Mel. She will be sorely missed by all nine of her children, Darlene, Stafford (Darlene), Marlene, Iris (Carl), Cheryl (Jake), Theresa (Jacques), Stan (Carla), Dan, Sue (Chris); eleven grandchildren, Mike, Chris, Jean-Paul, Cory (Steve), Patrick, Justin, Wally, Jennifer, Stephan, Kelsey and Brittany; and one great-grandchild Jessica. A special thanks to all of mom's family and friends for their kindness and support throughout her illness and to all the wonderful nurses and doctors on the fifth floor south wing at Victoria General Hospital. Prayers will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 7, 2007, at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1001 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg, MB. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2007, also at the church. If so desired in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church Cemetery Fund, Ozerna, MB, in care of Bill Macksymchuk, Box 96, Sandy Lake, Manitoba R0J 1X0.
