EVA KATHLEEN MITCHELL July 25, 1907 - December 4, 2007 Eva Kathleen Mitchell passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 4, at the age of 100 years, at the Charleswood Care Centre, where she has lived for the past three years. Eva was predeceased by her beloved husband, Alexander Orchison Mitchell, in 1952; by her parents, Samuel and Druscilla Jacobs; by her sisters, Sadie Darling and Florence Glass, and brothers, Albert and Wilbur Jacobs. Left to mourn her loss is her large and loving family: Ruth Mitchell and Alex Cruickshank, Ronald and Mary Mitchell, Lynne Mitchell Pedersen and Arne Pedersen, Francie and David Brownlee. Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren will remember Nana or Grandma Eva: Shawna and Daryl Kynoch, Ian, Timothy and Meghan; Kent Strang; David Strang and Kristel Van Ineveld, Mitchell; Bruce Strang and Nancy Hennen, Sean and Marc; Gerry Browne and Jayne Steeves; Leslie and John Carey, Breanna, Chris and Emily; Rob Browne and Laura Phillips; Lauren and Graham Mitchell-Lawson, Gillian and Abigail; Andrea Mitchell White and Bill White, Owen; Ingrid Pedersen Kost and Jon Kost, Jacob and Kari Lynne; Sven Pedersen and Rhonda Diamond, Annika and Stephanie; Marc Brownlee; Michael Brownlee and Tanya Cheal, Emma. Eva is also survived by sisters-in-law, Lil Jacobs of Selkirk, Ruth Mitchell of Winnipeg, and Ruth Mitchell of Vancouver, as well as many nieces and nephews. Eva was born in Rathwell, Manitoba, on July 25, 1907. She married the love of her life, Alex Mitchell and together they farmed north of Treherne, where their four children were born. Alex joined the RCAF in 1940, and shortly after, Eva and family moved into Treherne. In 1947, the family moved to Carberry. When her family was grown, Eva began to work at Fox Memorial Hospital, where she continued until 1968, when she moved to Winnipeg. She then worked at Concordia Hospital until she retired. Eva spent over 30 happy years in her retirement home, Richmond Gardens, where she made many friends and took special care of many people, making tea or a treat, doing their shopping, and visiting those who couldn't go out. Eva quilted prodigiously to raise funds for the Richmond Gardens Residents' Association, and, to lovingly craft a Grandma/Nana Quilt for everyone of her family including each and every one of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also knitted hundreds of pairs of mitts for the Christmas Cheer Board and the Mitten Tree at Trinity Church. Eva enjoyed traveling with her family throughout the United States and Canada, and later, three trips to Britain and Ireland, with her three daughters, a thrill of a lifetime for Eva. Throughout her life, Eva passed on to her family a love of music, singing, dancing, as well as the core values of hard work and determination. She always said that if a job was worth doing, it was worth doing well! Until her last day, she was able to give us her beautiful Irish smile, which lit up her eyes and our hearts. We will always love and miss you Eva, and never forget you. The family would like to extend a sincere thanks to the wonderful staff at the Charleswood Care Centre, who provided loving care and kindness to Eva throughout her stay. They treated Eva as a friend. Thanks to all, and, a very special thanks to the staff on Unit 4. A memorial service for Eva will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 8 at Trinity United Church, 933 Summerside Ave., Winnipeg. A brief public interment service will be held at the Carberry Cemetery on Monday, December 10 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family invites friends to make a donation in Eva's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2, to the Residents' Outing Program of the Recreation Department at the Charleswood Care Centre, 5501 Roblin Blvd., Winnipeg, MB R3R O6B, or to a charity of your choice.
