J. KEN BUTTERILL 1936 2007 Peacefully, on Saturday, December 1, 2007, Ken Butterill died at the age of 71 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Gladys Mae (MacPherson) and John Delbert. Ken will be lovingly missed by his wife Chris of 43 years; sons, David, Richard (Samantha), and James (Jacqueline); grandchildren, Jordan, Alexander, Devin and Vanessa; cousin Gary of Niagara Falls; many nieces and nephews; and childhood friends, Don Collins, Hank Kryzanski, Eugene Zinko, and Garth McLeod. Ken was born in Winnipeg and attended Mulvey and Gordon Bell High School. As a youth he proudly served in the Air Cadet Corps and played baseball and hockey. A member of Young United Church Young People's, he was coached in basketball by his mentor, the late Olympian, Carl Ridd, who encouraged Ken as the St. Andrew's Junior team went to the city championships. Leaving school, Ken entered CA; articled with Sharpe Woodly (KPMG); and moved to industry with the CMA program, serving in accounting, auditing and management positions with corporations and retiring after 20 years service with Nygard International in 2001. In the community he coached minor hockey and baseball and played Old Timers hockey, all with Richmond-Kings C.C. He was charter president of the Ft. Garry Kinsmen Club and enjoyed fellowship and fundraising with local and national Kin/K 40s. He was awarded the Order of the Gate Ft. Garry for community service. A keen sports fan with season's tickets to the Bombers, and Jets for their entire existence in Winnipeg, in earlier days Ken enjoyed fishing, golf and tennis especially at Falcon Lake. Long walks, minding family puppies, adventures with his grandchildren, and the many parties at Bill and Judy Keegan's with the Falcon Lake gang were a great joy for him. Family travel in North America and Europe, camping trips, scouting, football, baseball, hockey practice and games with his sons were his passion as the boys grew. An avid reader, he had the gift of applying lessons learned to improve his and others' lives. His great sense of humour was shared with a vast circle of friends and acquaintances; he found new friends in CLC, morning coffee chats, and weekly Bible study group at St. Ignatius. During their 60th Anniversary celebration the CMAs recently honoured Ken for his 39 years service. Ken was an avid supporter of educational efforts and many charitable events, including those of St. Mary's Academy, St. Paul's High School, St. Paul's College, Variety the Children's Charity, Heart Stroke, Diabetes Association. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Ken's memory would be appreciated to these or a charity of your choice.
