WALTER MISURKA Peacefully at home, on December 5, 2007, at the age of 80, Walter Misurka passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Walter began his life on March 2, 1927 in Elma, MB. He was the youngest and last surviving child of Lucas and Katherine Misurka. At the young age of 17, he left the family homestead and joined the Royal Canadian Navy with the hopes of seeing the world. He spent a total of 13 years serving his country in both the navy and air force. Walter had the distinction of being the first serviceman to return to Winnipeg at the end of the Korean War. Shortly after he left the forces, he met his wife Ella in Kenora, Ontario. They were soon married and moved to Winnipeg where they started a family. Walter worked for many years as a letter carrier for Canada Post, retiring in 1989. He also had a side business of selling Christmas trees from the plantation of over 20,000 evergreens he planted by hand in the 1960s. After retirement, Walter and Ella moved to the farm in Elma. They spent many years enjoying the wildlife, snowshoeing, gardening, birdwatching and tending the trees. They enjoyed traveling, making memorable trips to Alaska, Poland, Russia and California. Walter was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ella, in 2004. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Florence Misurka (Richard Lambert), David Misurka (Ilona), Katherine Misurka-Feal (Dana Feal), Andrew Misurka (Viviane); his granddaughters, Kristina, Samantha, Désirée, and Ella; brothers-in-law, Hugo Froese and Ernie Erickson; sisters-in-law, Ricky Klassen, Dorothy Misurko and Ethel Misurka, well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Walter leaves to his children and grand-children an appreciation of nature, the importance of family and a strong work ethic. Special thanks to the WRHA Palliative Home Care team, especially nurse Brenda and Dr. LaRiviere. Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 8, 2007 at Green Acres Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, R3E 0V9.
