HENRY ALFRED (HANK) CARTY On Thursday, December 6, 2007, Hank Carty peacefully passed away at his home in south Winnipeg. Hank was born on September 6, 1925 in rural Manitoba, and later moved to Winnipeg in his late teens. While serving in the Reserves, Hank became heavily involved in competitive, full-bore target shooting, becoming a member of the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association (DCRA) in 1951. He would remain a member for the next 56 years until his death. In addition, Hank was a honourable life-member and governor of the Manitoba Provincial Rifle Association (MPRA), serving on their executive committee since 1958. Hank held several offices and titles during his life in competitive shooting, including: Shooting Commandant of the 1967 Pan-Am Games in Winnipeg; Director of the MPRA Centennial Prize Meet (1972); MPRA Executive Vice-President (1979-83); MPRA President (1984-1993); DRCA Provincial Vice-President (1984-2005); and Chairman of Rifle Events (Shooting Federation of Canada Nationals, 1993). Hank also received a number of awards throughout his shooting career, not only for his competitive excellence, but also for his contribution to the sport. Some of these awards include: the International Shooting Union Certificate of Merit (1967); the Manitoba Lieutenant Governor's Gold Medal for top shooter at the province's annual prize meet (1989); and the MPRA Volunteer Award (1991). Hank travelled to England for the Bisley Prize Meet in 1981, fulfilling a lifelong goal. In 1984, and again in 1988, he was a member of the Canadian Rifle team, which travelled and competed extensively throughout New Zealand and Australia. In addition to his involvement with various rifle and shooting associations, Hank was also very proud of his roles as military team-shooting coach (1953-1957); army cadet coach for the 1226 Fort Garry Horse Cadet Corps (1974-1984); and as a commanding officer for the same unit. After twenty years in sales, Hank became self-employed until his retirement in 2000. Hank was predeceased by his parents, Philip and Helena Carty and by his elder brother Philip. He is survived by his son Brent and Brent's mother Louise. Hank will be sadly missed by his wife Judi and her family, including Tara (Jason), Gord, Paul (Ivy), Colette, Colleen and Marcus, as well as by his many grandchildren and friends. The family wishes to thank the following pallbearers, Gordon Jones, Paul Allaman, Jesse Allaman, Justin Toews, Jason Kozak, and Jeff Keele. They would also like to thank the honourary pallbearers: George McCartney, Murray Sloane, Don and Doran Sewell, Adolf Hoffman, and Masombuku Bukuru. Hank's wife Judi would finally like to extend a heartfelt 'Thank you' to the Manitoba Regional Health Authority and their staff for their help and compassionate care during Hank's last few years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to do so may make a donation to MPRA or the Parkinson's Society. A celebration of Hank's life will take place on Wednesday, December 12 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Viewing will be held prior to the service with interment and reception to follow. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME 885-9715
