BETTY PEGGY DEACON Betty Peggy Deacon passed away in Brandon on Friday, December 7, 2007. Left to mourn is her longtime friend and husband of 56 years, R.J. Bob Deacon; sons Barry and Brian (Sheila); daughter Beverley Deacon; grand-children: Sarah, A.J. and Jillian. Betty is also survived by her sisters-in-law Marg Paxton, Mary Vuignier, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her younger brother Barry; infant twin siblings and parents, Bert and Nellie McKay. Betty was born in Wynyard, Saskatchewan on January 30, 1928. She moved to Minnedosa in 1939 where she completed her schooling and met her future husband. Betty graduated from Grace Hospital, Registered Nursing Program in 1950. She worked as the night supervisor at the Misericordia Hospital and then private duty nursing in Winnipeg for the first five years of her career. On September 6, 1951 Bob and Betty were married and in 1955 they moved to Brandon where they began raising their family. Motherhood and family were extremely important to Betty and she cherished family times together and took great interest in all that her children were involved in. As her family grew, Betty returned to part time nursing at Central Park Lodge where she gained the reputation of being quick to share a laugh and offer a shoulder to lean on if needed. She was known as Mom to many of her co-workers. Following Bob's transfer to Winnipeg in 1974, Betty nursed at Oakview Personal Care Home where she made many friends among her colleagues and residents alike. In 1986, Bob retired and they returned to Brandon where Betty continued her nursing career at Hillcrest Place until her retirement in 1993. Betty was an active volunteer in varying capacities such as canvassing for various charities. She was a member of the U.C.W. Unit #8 of Central United Church, the Fraternal Order of Eastern Star Queen Mary Chapter#3 and the Bridge Club in years past and loved getting together socially with her many friends. Betty experienced many wonderful times at the cabin in Clear Lake and enjoyed the real close-knit community there. Betty enjoyed traveling and particularly liked to spend time each spring in B.C. Betty was physically active. In earlier years she participated in winter fun such as skating with her friends and later, curling and cross-country skiing; she also enjoyed going for walks. Betty loved being a grandma and cared deeply about the welfare of her grandchildren. She held a great affection for the family dogs over the years, which shared in her life. In the last couple of years, ill health prevented Betty from participating fully in life, but she faced her challenges with courage and fought the good fight . The Ceremony to Celebrate Betty's Life was held at Memories Chapel, Brandon, on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 with a lovely Order of the Eastern Star portion to pay tribute to this special lady. The Rev. Harvey Hurren officiated. Special attendees were Marg Paxton (Bob's sister) all the way from Courtney, BC, and Christina Carlson (Bob's 91 year old aunt). Unable to attend but near in our hearts were Bill and Jean Leitch, Hugh and Ilene McKay (Betty's cousins), good friends Don and Ev Robertson and Norman and Marie Rose, all of B.C. A private interment was held in the Brandon Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in Betty's memory may be made to a charity of choice. Thank you to Rev. Harvey Hurren who conducted a beautiful and meaningful service and a deep appreciation to Vern Schneider and the staff at Memories for their support and superb professionalism.
