Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANNIE HORBAY It is with deep sorrow that we wish to announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Annie Horbay. Peacefully at her home, she fell asleep in the arms of the Lord on the morning of Wednesday, December 19, 2007. She was born on August 28, 1921, in Gilbert Plains (Halych), Manitoba, the fourth of ten children in the family of Peter and Maria (Nykolaishyn) Huculak. She attended elementary school, walking daily a distance of three miles one way. After a brief period of time helping with domestic responsibilities, she was employed in Portage La Prairie and then Roblin, Manitoba. Her strong work ethic made her a valuable employee in all aspects of the restaurant business. It was during this time that she met Peter Horbay and in 1942 Peter and Annie were married. In 1943, they settled at the Sideview Farm location, west of Roblin, Manitoba, where they lovingly toiled for 43 years. It was there that she was blessed with three children, Gerald, Taras, and Zenovia. Annie was a devout member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada and a lifelong member of The Ukrainian Women's Association of Canada. For her tireless work, she received numerous official certificates of distinction awards, one of the most recent being the Millennium Multicultural Award, presented at the Manitoba Legislature. Her unwavering faith in God was a shining example not only for her family, but for everyone that knew her. This spiritual strength carried her throughout many of life's challenges, especially after the untimely death of her husband Peter, followed by the tragic loss of her son Taras, only three months later. Her daily prayers always, without fail, became the spiritual guide for her family. The depth of her respect for her ancestry was exceptional. The dedication that she continually demonstrated in preserving her Ukrainian heritage was best exemplified in her building and developing the Roblin Ukrainian Summer School Programs into one of the largest in Canada. This tremendous achievement brought her recognition and acclaim from prominent politicians at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels. Not withstanding that Annie had very little formal education, her desire to continually learn and her ability to grasp new concepts were an inspiration to her family and everyone that knew her. This was greatly evident in the many creative skills she mastered; embroidery, sewing, knitting, ceramics, pysanky, to name a few. Always productive, always positive, her greatest reward was in sharing her knowledge with an eager student. Left to cherish her memory are son Gerald and wife Myrtle (nee Yellowaga) of Winnipeg, daughter Zenovia (Dr. Basil) Zmiyiwsky of Toronto, daughter-in-law Angela (nee Laba) of Winnipeg; grandchildren Orysia (Jim) Barnes, Michael (Debbie) Horbay, and Lesya Horbay; Dr. Paul (Nadia) Zmiyiwsky, Dr. Mark (Dr. Erika) Zmiyiwsky, and Viera Zmiyiwsky; Stefan and Larissa Horbay; great-grandchildren Jordan and Summer Barnes; Basil, Luke, and Stefanie Zmiyiwsky; sisters Josie (Ben) Kroeker, Nellie Angus, and Sylvia (Carl) Fuchs; two sisters-in-law Caroline Shewchuk and Grace Melnyk; nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members in Ukraine. She was predeceased by husband Peter and son Taras; sisters Jean, Helen, Olive and Emily; brothers John and Joseph. Prayer service (Panachyda) will be held Friday, December 21, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, 1175 Main Street, Winnipeg. The funeral service will be held Saturday, December 22, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, 1175 Main Street, Winnipeg, with co-celebrants, Very Rev.
