Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySADAKO MIZOBUCHI (nee INOUE) Born in Kochi, Japan on August 5, 1917, Sadako Mizobuchi died at the Concordia Hospital on December 20, 2007 at the age of 90 due to complications following a minor heart attack. Predeceased by her husband David Kiyoshi Mizobuchi (1973); her brother Masami Inoue, and her son John (2002), Sadako is survived by her daughter Sachiko (Norm) Guilbert; daughter-in-law Minori Mizobuchi, and by five grandchildren, Naomi Guilbert (Hiroshi Koshiyama), Kimi Guilbert (Steve Lawrie), and Robert, Norman, and Andrew Mizobuchi. She also leaves behind two great-grand children, Tomi and Remi Lawrie, and her beloved cat, Boo. In 1936 at the age of 18, Sadako married David Kiyoshi in Kochi. The following year she moved to Canada where David had been living and working since the age of 16. Initially settling down in Vancouver where they ran a small fruit and vegetable store and had their first child, the family relocated to Winnipeg Manitoba in 1940. Sadako worked at many different places, including the Sharon Home and Winnipeg Lampshade before establishing her own lampshade business in her North End home. Over the years, she made and recovered lampshades for clients across the city. Many Winnipegers would have seen her handiwork in Mother Tucker's Restaurant on Donald St. in the 1980's. Sadako enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling, and cooking. Her sekihan (a celebratory Japanese dish of rice and red beans) was always a favourite at family birthdays. A loving grandma with an elegant sense of style, a strong will, and a wonderful sense of humour, she will be deeply missed. Very special thanks to Sadako's hospital roommate, Brigitte King. Brigitte should have drawn a hospital salary for her constant vigilance and her heartfelt kindness. Thanks also to Andrea from the hospital staff for treating all the patients on the third floor with compassion and respect. A funeral service will be held on December 27 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Knox United Church, 400 Edmonton St. with Reverend Y. Masaki officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sadako's memory to: Friends of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, 1560-201 Portage Ave., Winnipeg MB, R3B 3K6. Phone: 1-866-828-9209.
