PETER KOHUCH After a short four-week battle with cancer, Peter Kohuch died peacefully on December 22, 2007. He was born June 26, 1930 in Mears, Manitoba, in the rural municipality of Rossburn. The eighth of 13 children, Peter attended Glen Elmo School and later Chmelnyski School in Mears, then worked the family farm for a number of years before heading to Winnipeg in 1957. He immediately found employment with CN Rail and worked there until his retirement in 1994. Peter leaves to cherish his memory, his brothers Alec (Mary), Nanaimo; Roy, Hardisty, AB; Rev. Deacon Nick (Mary), Winnipeg; Don (Irene), Calgary; Terry (Joanne), Dryden; Walter (Eleanor), Winnipeg; sisters Anne Ariss, Brandon; Mary Maydaniuk, Sandy Lake; Stella Andrusiak, Winnipeg; Mildred Sakundiak (Joseph), Calgary; brother-in-law Stanley Maydaniuk, Rossburn; and many nieces and nephews. Peter was predeceased by his parents, Alec and Anastasia; brother Fred and his wife Nellie, sister Dora; sister-in-law Olive Kohuch (Michalchuk); brother-in-law Frank Maydaniuk; nephews Donnie, Garry and Jeffrey. A hard-working, tireless man who lived his entire life with solid family values and uncanny common sense, Peter was as down-to-earth as they come, and had a strong sense of humour even until the very end. He was a friendly man with a booming voice and he was never afraid to lead the family in a few carols around the table at Christmastime. Peter was an outdoorsman and for many years he enjoyed his annual hunting trips with his brother Don in Alberta and fishing trips with his brother Terry in Dryden. And he always found the time to go back to the farm to hunt with his nephew Leonard - Uncle Peter, I will always cherish my memories of the many trips to the farm I took with you. Peter's mother Anastasia lived with him for many years when she left the farm and came to Winnipeg. After her death, Peter kept his home Peter's Inn , as many family members called it open to all of us for our gatherings and parties, carrying on many of the traditions we had all come to love. No one could make a cup of tea like Peter and we all miss our bocce games in his spacious backyard. While he was known for the best sauerkraut and headcheese around, it was always a treat for him when the women invaded his kitchen for a big family feast, giving him the day off from cooking. Peter was a devout man and an active member of St. Josaphat, Ukrainian Catholic Church since 1961. Prayers will be said at Cropo Funeral Chapel on Friday, December 28 at 8:00 p.m. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 29 at St. Josaphat Church, 590 Alverstone St., with Rev. Fr. Nestor Yakiwchuk and Rev. Deacon Nick Kohuch officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Peter's brothers. The entire family thanks the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Boniface Hospital, 5th floor and 8th floor palliative care for their kind and attentive care and for making Peter comfortable until the end. Special thanks to Drs. Jowett, Varelli and Milner for their compassion and care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Peter's memory to St. Josaphat, Ukrainian Catholic Church or Canadian Diabetes, 200-310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6.
