JEAN LORRAINE MATCHETT Jean Matchett (nee Clayton) passed away peacefully in her sleep at Deer Lodge Centre Dec. 24, 2007. She was born Jan. 7, 1917 in Gladstone to Isabel and Harold Clayton and has been a long time resident of the Courts of St. James and more recently Sturgeon Creek II. Jean was predeceased by Les, her loving husband of 58 years, in 1999 and is survived by son Ken (Susanne) Matchett of Winnipeg and daughter Linda (Bob) McMillan of Brandon. She was especially proud of her grandchildren, Lori (Dennis) Sierhuis and Kim (Mark) Metcalfe of Winnipeg, Kathy (Matt) Johnson of Balmertown, ON, Karen (Rob) Tokar of Saskatoon and Kathy McMillan (fiancé Kevin Nicol) of Brandon and her great-grandchildren, Evan McMillan, Riley, Katelyn, Tyler and Sophie Sierhuis, Mallory and Morgan Johnson and Madeline Metcalfe. She was also predeceased by her six brothers, (Arthur, Lorne, Lyle, Murray, Don and Harold) and sister (Marg Grantham). Jean was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and thrived on watching her family grow and be happy. Her sharp mind was admired by all, and she would often be known to master a tough jigsaw puzzle or finish the last few words on the difficult crossword puzzle. Her positive attitude and down-to-earth approach to what mattered most in life will be her legacy to her family. She made everything seem better with a cup of tea. Jean spent her life in the West End of Winnipeg, raising her family on Sherburn Street. She and Les retired at the Courts of St. James where they spent 19 happy years. They enjoyed travelling, including 23 trips to their favourite spot Hawaii. Jean bowled for 55 years in the Victoria Ladies bowling league, and was known to organize gambling trips for fellow residents of the Courts, well into her 80s. Recently, she loved her new home in Sturgeon Creek II, where she met both new and old friends and enjoyed playing cards and socializing with them all. She will be especially missed by close friends Doreen Morris and Mae McMillan. During her working life, Jean spent many years making popcorn at the Winnipeg Stadium and Winnipeg Arena, and ultimately working in the ticket office of Winnipeg. Enterprises. In her early years in Winnipeg she worked at Eaton's. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive on Friday, December 28 at 2:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined and donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
