Lawrence was born on February 2, 1924 near Rossburn, Manitoba. He left the family farm at a young age to join The Royal Winnipeg Rifles and later the Nova Scotia Highland Regiment Infantry in Halifax Nova Scotia. There he met and married the love of his life Dorothy. He served his country honorably in the Second World War fighting in the frontlines overseas. After the war, Lawrence and Dorothy raised their family for a time in Halifax and later moved to Winnipeg. Lawrence worked for the City Of Winnipeg Public Works Department for over 25 years until his retirement. He studied horticulture and created many beautiful gardens in both Kildonan and Assiniboine Parks. Lawrence was also an active church member and served as an elder at Kildonan Presbyterian Church for many years. Besides gardening, Lawrence loved the outdoors, fishing and hunting. The Whiteshell was his favourite retreat and we have many fond family memories of the times spent at the cottage at Red Rock Lake. We will really miss Pa's laughter and great family gatherings we shared together. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Seven Oaks Hospital and The Middle Church Home Of Winnipeg for their caring and compassion. Funeral Service will be held on January 2, 2008 at Kildonan Community Church, 2373 Main Street at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Brenda Fraser officiating. Interment will follow at the Kildonan Presbyterian Church gravesite directly south of the church. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Lawrence's memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 200-310 Broadway, R3C 0S6. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
